1940s UK aerial survey

Post by TobyV »

Apologies if someone has found this before, but you may find this 1940s data from getmapping.com interesting.

London City can clearly be seen still as docks and Hendon of course is there. Strangely, some airfields seem to haev been obscured in the photos. Hatfield and Southampton have been almost completely swapped out to appear as fields!! The photos claim to be between 1940 and 1947 which should show substantial buildings at both of these airfields where none can be seen! Heathrow is pretty complete and so is Weybridge and even one hangar can be seen at Wisley as well as most of Radlett (although the main runway is somewhat shorter).

Great find Toby. Some interesting stuff. Just been looking at some airfields. No much there to identify Hatfield in 40 - 47 :xsmile: Intresting the 99 one i think shows the Trident, and what looks like another one on the dump?

Yup, G-AWZO outside the Londa Business Aviation Hangar. Also the front section of G-AVYE (previously preserved at Wroughton until 1987) on the fire dump. Both removed around 2002.

Hi Leif,

Moreton Valence is covered but half of GAC appears to be there. The older buildings including the Belfast hangars are clearly visible and the flying area is camouflaged in the same way as in some of the photos your friend Alan sent me. The false hedgerows are evident because their "shadows" appear to fall in different directions! If I can dig out the corresponding pic from what you or Alan previously sent me, I'll post it!

Toby
