We had a chuffa-billy come down the mainline in Goring heading toward Reading on Wed. Couldn't see which one it was as I was on the bike at the time.. certainly not as posh as the one pictured above.. more your Thomas the Tank Engine looking front (without the eyes, nose and mouth) Nice to see though and quite threw me.

I couldn't see the wheels but I'm pretty sure the Battle of Britain class had the same rather beautiful wheels with circular machined wells to for the spokes as the Merchant Navy class...Does she still have those wheels or are they now conventional spokings?

Yes Peter she still has the BFB (Bulleid Firth Brown) wheels, One of Oliver Bulleids many innovations on these locos. They were designed to be weight saving I believe.

I'm pleased to hear that...I thought those wheels were wonderful and those lovely green Southern Railway locos were my favourites when I was a schoolboy and collecting numbers

Here are a few shots of a couple more of these locos at the Eastleigh works celebration in May this year outside their birthplace, (well the merchant navy anyway) the West Country and Battle of Britain class were mainly built along the coast at Brighton.

West Country Class 34028 Eddystone, an example of the modified version of the 'light' pacific.


A Merchant Navy on the left (Canadian Pacific) with an un-modified Battle of Britain class Manston and Eddystone again.


And finally not a Bulleid Pacific, but a favourite of mine from a slightly earlier era designed by Richard Maunsell. Lord Nelson Class Lord Nelson, another product of the Eastleigh works.

Lovely...Well they are Classic British and they take me back to my youth, the Tramway ride through the Kingsway Tunnel and then walking across the Hungerford Bridge to Waterloo Station, where I could watch these wonderful Southern Railway elegant giants in action

Take me back to my youth also, and brings to mind the smell of steam locomotives - a mixture of burning coal, soot, wet steam , hot oil and a dozen other scents from what in retrospect seem to have been happier -even if less prosperous and comfortable - days
