Shock! Horror! Slight Damage!

Post by speedbird591 »

I was just googling for some 'AI' and got diverted by an article about Air India (AI). I know we're always knocking uninformed press comments about aviation incidents, but the British press do manage a bit better than these little gems from the subcontinent

The incident was a taxying Air India aircraft having it's windscreen cracked by a stone kicked up by the blast from a Jet Airways aircraft. Here are some wonderful comments by 'airport sources' and 'experts'.
IndiaInfo.com wrote:In yet another breach of flying norms, the pilot of a Jet Airways plane pressed the throttle button so hard that it caused a jet blast, damaging an Air India flight.
The incident, which could have proved disastrous, took place at the Delhi airport on Sunday evening. The jet blast shattered the windscreen of the Air India flight which was waiting to take off. However, no one was injured.

Pilots are advised to keep the power of engine low while moving towards the runway. But in this incident, the pilot seems to have violated the guideline.
The commander gave the engines more thrust than what is normally needed for taxiing. The more the thrust you give to the engines, the more is the power output. The faster the aircraft moves, more is the resultant exhaust blast from its engines

An aviation expert said there is a clear guideline by the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) about the throttle button. "If a pilot is pressing the throttle button on ground, his judgment has to be accurate. Because if he presses the button hard, it can lead to a disaster,"he said.

"Pilots have to be careful to avoid such incidents,"the expert added.
You have been warned! A lighter touch on that throttle button could help you avoid disaster!

Ian :)
