War in the Air...

Post by petermcleland »

I just received a belated Christmas present from my brother...A 6 DVD set of the BBC's War in the Air...I see it was published in 2007 and has a total run time of 450 mins.

I have only looked at the first part of DVD 1 and thought I would say what wonderful quality this Black and White presentation has...On first starting, I could see that the Aspect Ratio was incorrect and the relevant button said 4:3...However, setting it to Auto switched it to a genuine 4:3 and that is quite obviously correct. I am really looking forward to watching the whole thing.

I imagine that many here are familiar with this series but I just thought I would mention how fine is its quality :)

Isn't it strange? Yesterday I started to view the series ( I have it on video) and not having seen it for some years , I too am amazed by its quality. I did wonder whether you were flying one of the 3 Meteors which we see at the beginning and end of each episode - it was made in about 1954! - I've got to the end of number 6 so far

Hi Chris,

No definitely not me flying one of those Meteors...My Meteor flying was limited to a bit in T7s during conversion to Vampire 5s and then I did the PGI Course at Central Gunnery School, Leconfield on Meteor 8s...I never flew in a vic of Meteors, but I spent a lot of time blasting away with its 20mm cannons at flags being towed over the North Sea

To this day I still recall watching this series with my late dad on our little black and white tv set.I have also recently seen it again on dvd ,and as already mentioned the quality is excellent. In my mind I associate this with the other excellent series of the same period 'Victory at Sea'.Both series had memorable pieces of misic as their themes, particularly Ron Goodwin's Victory at Sea.Again I remember watching the original run of Victory at Sea with Dad,not realising what effect it must have had on him due to his service as a gunner in the Royal Navy in WW2.Sorry for rambling on a bit.EricT :'(
Now at the age where I know I like girls but can't remember why!

Hmm... I think you'll find that it was not Ron Goodwin but Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame) who wrote the music for Victory at Sea.

Just found 'War In The Air' at Lovefilm, and have put it on my rental list. Thanks, Peter, I'd never heard of it.
