FEX, REX, GEX HELP!!!

Post by TSR2 »

Hi Chaps,

I bought Flight Environment X when it first came out (long before REX) and foolishly bought Ultimate Terrain Europe, which has since been uninstalled as it randomly added land class to the sea! in areas such as the Scilly Isles... infact, on one occasion Belfast Lough was filled in with Farmland!!!
I know Rex has the weather engine etc and i may go down that road at some point. My question is does anyone have Ground Environment X and does it interfere with Horizon GenX photo Scenery or any of the UK2000 stuff for FSX?

Cheers,

Ben.

Hi Ben..

I don't have anything like that for FSX.. just GenXv2 and the VFR Airfield series but yesterday, while flying Old Warden - Duxford (using system time which was in reality, too late to be out in a Tiggie as it was going dark).. not long after I crossed the A1M, the night effect textures for GenXv2 appeared not to be coming up. I saw 2 areas of light in the distance.. Fowlmere and Duxford and all below was dark as if I were in FS9 using VFRPhoto. As I reached Fowlmere, I panned around to see if the night textures were keeping up behind me and what did I see.. SEA. I only noticed what it was by panning round as the moonlight reflected off it :-O
This doesn't answer your problem but highlights that GenXv2 can throw it's own parties without any help from UTE 8)

I must check that out Dave. just waiting for the FEX SHD update to install at the moment, But I have been over that area in the dark, albeit higher and faster than in the Moth and never noticed anything odd. *-)

Well mate..

I've been to Duxford in the daytime with DG's version (on my old pc) and never seen sea in this part of the world! Fowlmere and Duxford stood above it which is why I could see them. Not sure what the hell was going on but for certain, the system wasn't happy with dragging the GenXv2 night textures out. I'll see if I can duplicate it and hope that I can't
I'm begining to think that running FSX with only 2gig isn't helping things but I had a look at a 4gig set of Corsair (the exact set recommended by Asus) and they're just too darned expensive. :(

Ben,

I run FEX, GEX, UTX (Europe) and GenX Photo Scenery V2... phew!! GEX works perfectly with GenX and if anything smooths the transition between the two because of the more realistic colours of GEX. If anything when you cross from GEX to GenX you miss the autogen and the sense that the world is populated, plus the nightlighting for GEX is far better than that of GenX. I can heartily recommend GEX, Scotland in particular looks much more realistic! BTW the problem with UTX is a known issue and there are fixes so it might be worth reinstalling. I also use SceneryTech landclass for Europe and USA.

Regards,
Chris

Hi Chris, Thanks for that. Did you have to do anything with the scenery order etc so that GEX would work with GenX? Also, Does GEX not do the same sort of thing as UTX? Could you explain the differences?

Hi Ben, with GEX and GenX order makes no difference as the GenX tiles overlay whatever is shown by FSX. Re the difference between UTX and GEX - UTX is landclass + addition of roads, rivers, rail and coastlines whereas GEX is textures only. GEX textures replace the FSX default and are called (as in default FSX) by whatever the landclass requests. A combination of UTX and SceneryTech seems to work very well.

Have a look at the various posts in http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_topics.asp?FID=38 for more details. GEX is the dog's whatsits and is well supported (more than might be said for FEX or GenX). New patches for Europe and USA/Canada are due soon and offer substantial improvements, particularly in USA/Can.

Chris

I use both VFRGenX and UTX. One benefit of UTX I've found when flying over VFRGenX is that many more roads are populated with moving traffic. I haven't bought GEX Europe yet, but am sure to do so just for use over Scotland.
