Anyone been scilly?

Post by VEGAS »

Hi guys,

Just wanted to see if anyone here has visited the Scilly Isles.

Its on my list of places to visit before I pop my clogs and really do fancy hopping on the twotter skybus and visiting for the day.

As a frequent visitor to Cornwall. I think our next visit down there may include a day trip out there. Although SWMBO isn't crazy about the idea. :dunno:

I have a little bit of a thing for remote islands and always fancied going out there having a look at life away from the mainland.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

Cheers

:) :)

Been there a couple of times on day trips whilst in Cornwall. Once by Islander from Lands End, & once via helicopter from Penzance.

Spent the day walking from the airport on a circular route around the island, ending up back at the airport for the flight back.

Lovely island, I'd recommend going

I took my boat there a few times some years ago...Very nice anchorages but you always needed to watch the weather like a hawk and be ready to nip back to the mainland before it went sour :)

A fantastic place.

I grew up in Cornwall, and by the time I started the sixth form a number of students from the Islands came to our school to study for their A-Level as there was no sixth form on the island, so listening to their stories I was eager to get out there and join them.

I never flew either from Lands End or Pz but always took the Scillonian from Penzance, its not for the suffers of sea sickness mind you as it only drags about a meter below the waterline due to the shallow anchorage in St Mary's harbour.

I always used to stay on the off Island to the north called St Martins, it was fantastic with miles of beaches and endless walks that you would often never come across another person. Also the Islands pub was a classic "close the curtains at 10.50pm can carry on till 4pm job :)"

In my experience I prefered the "off" islands as they felt more remote, St Mary's to me sometimes felt like I was still in St Ives on the mainland.

Have a fantastic time if you do visit.

Best,

Fraser.

Been there virtually and didn't really return so far -
as I crashed PAD's Air Southwest Dash-8 at EGHE in bad weather...
