Cars You Have Driven

Post by ChrisHunt »

Reading through a debate (war) on another forum about the use of safety aids in cars got me thinking of the cr@p I've driven in the past where safety didn't come into it. So, preferably in the order you have owned/driven, list the cars - even those you have hired, borrowed etc. Include bikes (motorized) for the two wheel enthusiasts.

Vauxhall Victor (first car - no license)
Triumph Herald (second car - still no license!)
SWB Landrover (in the army now - still no license though!)
Bedford RL (not telling)
Hardtop Landrover (license at last!)
Austin K9
Proper Landrover!
Ford Escort Mk I
Ford Escort Mk II
Austin 1100 (hire car - very dodgy, only company prepared to hire to people with license less than a year)
Austin Maxi (hire car - as above but possibly worse)
Ford Cortina Mk II (company car - someone elses)
Ford Fiesta Mk I (hire car)
Moggy (borrowed)
Mitsubishi Colt (hire car - much slower than it looked)
Ford Sierra Mk I (hire car - ugh)
Austin Princess (hire car - truly terrible)
Ford Escort Mk V (hire car)
Vauxhall Cavalier Mk 1 (hire car)
Austin Montego (hire car - somewhere in this box there are gears!)
Honda Vision (two wheels - own transport again)
Fiat 128 (own car but very second hand - went about 3 months with 3rd gear only!)
Triumph Stag Straight 6 (own car, even more second hand - lovely to drive but extremely frustrating to own!)
Vauxhall Astra/Belmont (company car - borrowed)
Triumph Acclaim (rebadged Honda, got written off after an accident with uninsured driver going through a red light)
Vauxhall Cavalier SRi (own car - much more like it!)
Citreon BX (company car - short term)
Vauxhall Vectra 1600 (company car - rubbish)
VW Golf Mk 1 (wifes car - put down during a Halfords Service - kind enough not to charge us)
Mini Clubman (wifes car - 70's version, needed more welding than Blackpool Tower)
Ford Sierra Saphire (wifes car - actually not that bad)
Volvo 440 (company car - for some reason wanted to write Vodka 440???)
Renault 21 Savanna (company car - 4 kids so more seats needed, start of a trend - interesting fault in ECU would be recalled today)
Renault Laguna (as for Savanna)
Seat Alhambra (as Savanna but kids got bigger)
Ford Mondeo (temporary - just shove the kids in the back somehow)
Citreon Synergie (another people carrier)
VW Sharan (same as Alhambra but much much less reliable)
Honda FRV (still 4 kids but wanted something smaller)
Honda Civic (2 kids have left home - yippee, but proved to be too small as the b*ggers still want to come on holiday with us!)
Honda Accord

Of that long list only the last three have the safety aids (Electronic Stability Control) much debated elsewhere.

Regards,
Chris

Good one Nick - did you actually need driving lessons before you took your test?

I forgot a couple in my list and talk about chalk and cheese: Fiat 128 (own car but very second hand); Triumph Stag Straight 6 (own car but even more second hand and only ever got 4 out of the 6 cylinders to run reliably and tuning the twin carbs was a real b*gger).

When the cars are listed in order it's easy to spot trends, e.g. income (or lack of).

Chris

Horse and cart ( my dad taught me so I could help round the harvest season on the farm)
Fiat 850 (learning to drive)
Hilman Imp (driving lessons)
Mini Clubman (I used to borrow it from a friend)
Ford Cortina II (first car after passing test)
Triumph Herald (with rotten rear hangers)
Vauxhall Cresta (with rotten sills)
Ford Zodiac (just rotten all through)
Datsun 120Y (First ever brand new car - tax free on posting to Belgium)
Triumph Dolomite 1850HL (Second brand new car)
Ford Fiesta (special loan of one of the first of the model in Belgium)
Ford Escort II (interim car)
Vauxhall Cavalier (hire car)
Morris Marina 1.8 (brand new)
Morris 1800 Land Crab (Company - Army - car)
Landrover Safari (Company car)
Morris Marina 1.3
Morris Ital 1.8 Estate (brand new)
Renault 16
Triumph Dolomite 1850HL
Triumph 2.5 PI
Audi 100 (given to me by a colleague who was fed up being towed home!)
Austin Allegro
Hilman Hunter
Audi 100
Fiat Strada
Lancia Delta (one ton of rust in close formation)
Triumph Acclaim
Citroen (a knackered old banger I was going to do up - failed)
Mitsubishi Lancer (Brand new tax free car in BAOR now and one of the best I have had with over 135000 trouble free miles)
BMW 320 (second car - brilliant drive)
Ford Escort II (second car - gave to son)
Austin Princess (error of judgement - bag of nails)
Datsun/Nissan 180B (company car - my company!!)
Mitsubishi Carisma (brand new - another corker)
Nissan Micra (2nd car - roller skate with engine)
Vauxhall Sintra (major error of judgement - computer continuously posting error messages)
Mitsubishi Space Star (brand new - not the best of the bunch)
Nissan Micra (2nd car again 1.3 and very nippy)
Renault Scenic
Hyandai Getz (2nd car)

Currently:
Renault Scenic (another one!)
Renault Modus (2nd car - very nippy but today I got a £900 servicing bill!!!)

And that encapsulates 40 years of driving. Think I'll go and lie down now.

I've only owned 4:

1980 Buick Skylark
1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
1996 Volkswagen Jetta
2006 Mini Cooper

The most memorable drive would have been in Belize - went on a bit of a Land Rover trek in a Defender 110.

The newest was just last weekend when I took the Mini in for a service. Asked for car for the day to putter about Omaha expecting a Mini of some fashion, ended up with a BMW 328ix. It was okay, but I wouldn't have one.

I'm not into this car lark but I understand this..
Rover 620 Ti - the best car I have ever had - I love it and can't bare to get rid of it, but shes on a SORN parked infron't of the new car as the Diff has gone
I feel the same about my ZX9R. I'd let it go to someone I knew but other than that.. it may well be in my name for the rest of MY life :worried:

Not seen anyone mention a Mini Moke yet. Spent many an hour in the hot rain of the Seychelles in one of these many moons ago ;)

Been in a Moke many a time, but I have never been to the Seychelles.
Some years ago I was told that in the Seychelles Motorboat Club, the loo doors are labelled "Inboards" and "Outboards".

If that isn't true, it ought to be  - can you confirm?
