Peculiar British Pubs: Have you visited any ?

Post by Paul K »

This is another of those enjoyable photo albums the Daily Telegraph often puts together...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/expatp ... -pubs.html

Anyone been in any of them ? I've been in The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds.

Only one I've been in is the Tan Hill Inn - few years ago now.

I found other photgraphs there fascinating (under more galleries) the hospitals that have closed and especially the ones of Top international April foolery. Oooops......Sorry.....just got carried away. Oh well, back to the thread, not been to any of 'em!! :(

Llandoger Trow, Prospect of Whitby, and Eagle and Child - but sadly, all of them more than 40 years ago!

'The Old Thirteenth Cheshire Astley Volunteer Rifleman Corps Inn'.

In my home town is the longest named pub in Great Britian

Not a bad pint either. Carling is £1.75! ;)

That was great to see that! Made me really homesick and wishing for a lazy sunday afternoon pint!

I've been to a couple of them, the Crooked House in Stourbridge was place where a bunch bands I was into in the early 90's (Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The Wonderstuff, PWEI) hung out so when I was at Uni in Coventry I went there on a pilgrimage lol.

The Jamaica Inn is another, that I would imagine has suffered greatly since the much needed and almost complete dual carriage / by passing of the A30 from Exeter to Penzance.

Also that one in the Lizard I think is spitting distance from Skippy Bing's house.

Great stuff to see, now.... where is my pint of Old Speckled Hen..... oh bugger... I live in the USA now

Visited Tan Hill many times when I was ensconced in the area, there was also a pub in Reeth that at closing time, if the constable arrived with his hat on, everyone drank up and left. If he arrived without his hat everyone stayed and the door got locked

Another oddity in the area, can't remember the name of it, was basically someone's living room and you were served through a hatch. I had my first taste of Old Peculiar there, before it became mainstream. The ale was served straight from a huge barrel and poured from an enamel jug.

The first one tasted like dish-water but after that you really didn't care

I thought that the Mermaid Inn in Rye looked familiar but I was wrong, it was the Standard Inn where we'd been. I have been to the The Top House in The Lizard.
Due to shortages and cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off.
