Quest - Ice Pilots

Post by AllanL »

I came across an Al Murray series about the Normandy landings on Quest while freeview channel hopping and noticed an ad for Ice Pilots, a 13 part series about Buffalo Airways based in Yellowknife. It starts on April 22nd. - a while off I know, but if I don't post this now I'll forget!!!

They are also showing a series about someone building a kit plane from the 14th. I'll probably forget to set the video for that too.

For a standup comedian Al Murray is a great front man for documentaries.

Could that be a rerun of "A Plane is Born" with Mark Evans?

I enjoyed some of his other series more. "An MG" and "A 4x4 is Born" were better IMO. The kit plane series included quite a lot about getting a PPL and the actual build was quite superficially covered.

Maybe it's a completely different series though. :dunno:

Quest is channel 38 on freeview, no idea when it started up - so if you have freeview and it isn't on the list it may need a retune to pick it up. Seems to be a techie Dave style channel from a quick squint at the listings - along with Ironside reruns!

Ice Pilots is a little over-dramatized at times in the North American Style, nonetheless it does show the extremes of weather these guys have to deal with in mainly radial engined aircraft. Much of the coverage centres around the 'Rampies' (Pilots in waiting) lifestyle and the conditions in which the maintenance guys have to deal with unexpected failures, usually out in the open miles from anywhere with really old aircraft. There's also the transatlantic flight of two CL-215 water bombers and subsequent adventures in Turkey. All in all a good show with some real characters

A coincidence. I found the Buffalo Airways livery for the Lockheed L-188 Electra and coupled that with with Fraser's brilliant panel. Did a flight from Hay River to Yellowknife. Buffalo Airways do lots of charter and cargo flights, but the flight I just mentioned is a scheduled passenger service. A very desolate part of the world. Windy and the ground was covered in snow. I don't envy those folks that live there. Here it supposed to be 26C tommorow and last Wednesday it hit 34C, setting a record for KIAD (Dulles).

So it seems!!!

Mind you instead of my usual idiocy in reading programme listings, this time their on-line programme listing is up the creek.

Maybe the volcanic ash is starting to affect me but I cannot see any listings anywhere showing Ice Pilots tonight. First showing on Quest seems to be next Thursday at 9pm.

We woz done.

The trailers for Ice Pilots - including one this afternoon, clearly stated an April 15th 9pm start. However Radio Times advertied the Chris Barry programmes - as delivered. According to RT the series starts NEXT thursday, but this is at odds with Quests on screen advertising for the series

I have sent a please explain e-mail to Quest to hear what their excuse is. I can however recommend Warehouse 13 in Virgin-1 at 9pm instead. A sort of poor mans X files
