USS Midway *12 pics*

Post by FlyTexas »

My final stop in San Diego was to visit the USS Midway. Built in 1943, launched in 1945, and decommissioned in 1992. She's 972 ft in length, a beam of 113 ft, displacement of 74,000 tons, and a speed of 33 knots. :RN:

Excellent pics !

I saw the Midway off Palawan in the Phillipines. We'd seen a number of her helicopters during the day, and eventually she came in view, passing us to starboard. As she came by, she launched a guard helicopter, then her E2C Hawkeye. Very impressive it was too. I can't recall her having any escort ships, however.

A very fine ship that. Though she was 15 to 20 years older than her contemporaries, she was in better shape than they were, and her crew were one of the best in the navy since they were essentially on permanent deployment, being home ported in Japan. I'm glad that they saved her, she's earned it.

Cheers Brian ;) Nice to see something like this saved for posterity

As is usually the case, there is so little REAL history on that side of the pond (my pub is over twice the age of the good ole U.S of A) it's nice to see you guy's grasp it with both hands and cherish it where here.. the birthplace of so many things over the years (and some of them not so good as others!), folk just don't give a damn 8)
