I've just monitored my system for a few mins mate.. nothing running, only the monitor software. I opened FF and watched the system peak for a second or so as the program opened but then it settled down showing little noticeable difference between what was happening with it open (blank page.. not active on a website) or with it closed :dunno: I really don't know what the answer is mate but FF shouldn't be draining all of your system resources either closed or open *-)

Maybe reloading FF might help *-)

Hello Mate :hello:

The thing with FF is that it auto updates (at least it does here) so even if I don't use it for ages (which is now the case), it always seems to be up to date. I've not knowingly installed a 'new version' for ages :dunno: Let me see what my version is.. v3.5.8 if that makes sense. I actually checked for updates yesterday as I wanted to put a translator in (to translate Joe as much as anything) but couldn't decide which one to go for so didn't bother

Is v3.5.8 what you're running or am I somehow terribly out of date?

Hi mate

That's a point I don't update but sometimes it tells me it's been updated. I have had prompts saying there is a new version if I want it but that's something else

I'm on the notebook atm but I'll check later on the version.

Funny thing.I'm missing the obvious here

I have Firefox up in the background on this snail of a machine and I'm using IE to write this but there is no system hogging by FF or anything else for that matter.

That can't even be the case that certain pages actually accessed the past causing hogging as they are the same

The high usage of FF is a series of peaks near max and are quite rythmic and even as if it is in a continous cycle trying to find something that's not there...Something corrupt on the PC??

The only difference I can see between the two machoines is that the PC is XP/SP3 and the notebook is WIndows 7 starter

Is this possibly a case of FF incompatability with older version sof Windows in their updated form??

But there again I think you are XP SP3 Dave??

No worries for now...when I get up to go into the bedroom I'll find a nice clean piece of wall to bang my head against......that sholuld help. :worried:

Hello Mate..

Well.. while I've had this page open in IE7, I've checked my FF again and it was as I'd said v3.5.8 so I checked for updates and it has brought me up to v3.5.11. It could be that Win7 uses a different numeric version of FF but I'd guess that the install/system check routine would know which OS you were running and load the appropriate version.. though I may be wrong *-) FF isn't my 'prefered' browser now because I had problems opening various vids with it so I went back to IE7. I keep FF installed though as certain sites won't download files using IE for some reason.. I'm thinking here of a French FS site I recently pulled some scenery from. The downloaded files were continually corrupt with IE so a French chap here (another Nigel) advised using FF and bless my soul, they worked fine 8) Don't ask me why that should be either

My system IS WinXP(Home) SP3 as you thought ;) I'll have a look to see if I can find v3.6.8 :)

Edit..
Odd I wasn't offered 3.6.8 when I updated but that does appear to be the latest version. Looking about what it has to say, the performance increases are all quoted for a Win7 machine though I couldn't find anywhere saying that it was exclusively for Win7 :dunno:

Cheers Dave :)

Maybe then I should load the older version on the PC *-)

I don't like FF either but am forced into using it for some sites

If I could I'd just be IE

Maybe have a play later :cpu:

If it's just for accessing certain sites you could try using Opera instead and see if that avoids the problem.
I've been using it as my main browser for a while as I thought FF was getting a bit bloated and so far I have had any problems.

OK Skip I'll look into that

Radar Virtuel is one site I access with FF as that won't run on IE without frequent breakdowns.

RV say to avoid IE as uit doesn't have the capcity to run it.

There are other that run better in FF ...I get the Script error coming up in IE evry couplke on minutes or so

Just to let you know, I'm running FF 3.6.8 on XPPro SP3 with no issues at all. CPU usage bounced up to around 41% on loading a page, but quickly settled back to idle of no more than 2%. I don't know what's going on Garry, but I don't think FF is likely to be solely responsible.

Not sure you really want to hear that... :hide:
