Chances are they will be given a pat on the back and sent back down another mine...

A truly amazing rescue that touched the hearts of so many.

Great to see something good in the news for a change. :)

Thinking about it, didn't exactly the same sort of thing happen in what was then West Germany sometime back in the 1960s ? A load of miners deep underground for long time, and eventually brought up a rescue drill-hole in a one-man capsule ? *-)

Paul, the German disaster was mentioned because they used something similar to the Chilean rescue pod, but I take it that the pod used by Chile was of a different design. http://www.aolnews.com/world/article/to ... l/19667140 Clinton Cragg of NASA designed the pod and the Chilean Navy built it.

Incidentally, the Chilean Navy was modelled after the Royal Navy. According to Wikipedia, Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald formerly a Captain in the British navy, was hired to be the first commander of the Navy, who in turn hired an all-anglophone complement of officers and midshipmen.

Hehe. Sadly, the Texas Navy was modeled after (of all countries) the Spanish navy. At least it's better than the US Navy which was heavily influenced by the French Navy early on. Had we kept with it, we'd probably have a win record just as impressive. :)
