Hi all,
Does anyone know whether it's possible to replace and/or tweak the default map in FSX so that it includes the locations of e.g. large towns and cities..? If yes, any pointers as to where to look..? I tried a Google search but wasn't able to find any relevant results.

Re: Replace/tweak FSX's default map?
Hi David..
Nice as that would be, I think the answer is no. The FS maps are meant to represent aeronuatical charts showing airspaces and airport data.. none of which include towns and cities. If there is such a monster, I've certainly not heard of it.

Re: Replace/tweak FSX's default map?
Thanks, Dave -- for those reasons, I imagined it was unlikely. Still, someone may've tried it. Although many airports are near to and named after cities and towns, there are still those conurbations without airports that it'd be nice to identify as I cruise along.

PS No work today, so off to stretch my wings in a 1-11 as far as Ibiza. Incidentally, I managed to fly a 200 series from Schiphol back to Manchester (i.e. one of those shorter flights) and arrive on time. A more sophisticated, staggered climb, a steeper descent and -- most of all -- a VFR rather than ATC approach under IFR seems to've made the difference. "¡Vive la diferencia!" (as I believe is said in Ibiza when pretending to translate the French).

Re: Replace/tweak FSX's default map?
If you download Plan-G which is a flightplanner/moving map you can view your position on a map in real time. It uses a combination of your FSX database for the airfields/navaids etc and google maps for the geographical stuff. Worth a look, especially if you've got a second monitor. The website is www.tasoftware.co.uk
Re: Replace/tweak FSX's default map?
Alas, no second monitor, but it looks intriguing and, as you imply, a potential alternative. I've downloaded it and will give it a try -- thanks, SkippyBing!

...and now an update:
So, thank you very much for pointing me toward it!
David
I tried Plan-G earlier this morning and was bowled over by how excellent it looks and how many features/tools it seems to have -- especially for a free program. Obviously, a labour of love. I'm going to continue using it -- if only to follow flights -- and send a contribution to support its development.SkippyBing wrote:If you download Plan-G which is a flightplanner/moving map you can view your position on a map in real time ......

GMap
...and another update:
Probably old news, but I also found the freeware program "GMap" by FSWidgets: a simple but good-looking moving-map program based on Google Maps. Various versions of it can be downloaded from around halfway down this page onwards. If I've understood correctly, the "EFB" version is the original one, the "Browser" version uses a Windows-style window and the "Garmin" one is the same but dressed up to look like...
