Aero Expo Friedrichshafen

Yesterday I visited the "Aero Expo" in Friedrichshafen, Germany. It is an exhibition of General Aviation aircraft from Gliders and Ultra-lights/ Very lights up to and including helicopters, more conventionally sized fixed wing GA aircraft and smaller Bizjets, components, services etc. Here is a selection of my photos from the event. Sadly only one "classic British" item found and that was in the car park:

Note the unusual propulsion arrangements. The propellers can swivel in order to make the craft very manoeuvrable

The original Do-X was originally tested on the neighbouring lake Constance, which I had crossed by car-ferry in the morning to get to Friedrischafen

I was quite impressed by these little Embraer bizjets

Note the "flick" in the leading edge of the fan blades towards the blade tips, presumably this surpresses endwall boundary layer / tip leakage interaction effects

Aircraft for sale in this hangar. Was impressed to see something that was almost within my budget, were I in the market for a single engined aircraft :lol:

Spotted this Bede Jet (BD-5) being wheeled out towards the runway

Two final shots of the Embraer Phenom 300. Can't help but be envious / admire the Embraer product range of RJs and bizjets. Twenty years ago, we had just such a product range in BAe :dunno:

Only thing is that's an Aero L-39, not L-29. :)

BTW, what ever happened to ZeppelinNT's project to build a passenger version of their airship?

Chris, quite right about the Let!

Re the Zeppelin I don't know. The one in my photos take 19 people according to the information in the hangar. Before I saw it over lake Constance from the ferry on the way over, I thought the Germans had given up on the mafter the Hindenberg!

Ian - it is or was my job. My colleague who was with me (the gentleman admiring the TR4) was the one who pointed out this feature of the design. He designs the Low Pressure steam turbine blades for a living, which aerodynamically are similar to front fans. For my part as a former aerodynamicist of turbine blades, I am speculating as to why they have this design feature. I think it acts to try to minimise the tip leakage, or in this particular case you have got the over-tip leakage interacting with the boundary layer that builds up on the walls of the duct.
