Well, that's entirely forgiveable, Eddie, under the circumstances!

This is the Canyon: Canyon Nerve XC 8.0. It's a German bike sold direct from the factory which makes them excellent value for money. They're winning all the tests in the mags at the moment - including Trail Bike of the Year for the SRAM XO geared 9.0. I've opted for the Shimano XT model. I tell you this purely so it won't take you long to catch up - when you're ready, of course. And the girls want you out of the house!

Thanks, Peter. 27 gears on the old bike and 30 on the new one! Thankfully you don't have to know which one you're in! As the hill gets steeper you keep changing down until you run out of gears - that's when you start exploring your lung capacity!

I think road bikes have the same number of gears too, but probably higher ratios.

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of an automatic gear change for such a bike...You could have some sort of pressure senser in the pedals that would signal the gear change...Then you could have a manual lever on the handle bars that would allow you to change the pedal pressure at which the gear change would occur...
