What will happen to the current USS John F Kennedy. I was under the impression as the last conventional powered carrier it was mothballed on retention for museum purposes.

Does the USN have no issues with dual ship naming?

CV-67 has been decomissioned. Once decomissioned, the name is no longer listed on the roster of active ships and thus is available for reassignment. There have been 2 USS Texas since the Super Dreadnaught (BB-35) that now stands as a museum in the Houston Ship Canal was decomissioned.

The US Navy also has a "pass" as well on BB-35 as it is technically a commissioned ship (and flagship) of the Texas Navy, further removing the ship from potential reactivation and problems (like they'd reactivate her instead of one of the Iowas anyway. :) ).

I wonder if they will sink the JFK to make an artificial reef and dive site ? If you can't turn it into a museum, I think sinking it in shallow waters and making it an amenity is a very good idea.

It could become a natural habitat for Flying Fish..

They did that with the Oriskany (an arguably more famous ship due to its connection with Sen. John McCain and it's numerous deployments to Vietnam) off the coast of Florida.
