Dan Air
I have just been browsing through a 1978 Dan Air flight magazine and according to their schedule there are no international services from Manchester. Now unless I was seeing things there were always plenty of Comets there in the 60's and 70's, and the odd 727. Could they have all been charters? While on the subject of Manchester I have also been reading bits from a book I bought a number of years ago, 'Manchester Airport' by R A Scholefield. An excellent read for anyone interested in EGCC or British airport development.

Re: Dan Air
Dan Air Comets were usually charters...it's possible that all the flight you saw were IT charters
There have been times where airports like Southend, Luton and Stansted and others have had virtualy no scheduled but were very busy airports with IT flights.
