I always prefer VC. I need someone to persuade me to prefer 2D as you are way too limited there, overhead panel on your windows pop-upped, same view all time, whole flight instead panning around for looking other things, etc etc. But some HJG models look so hardworked and mediocre-detailed, yet no VC. Hence I sometimes wonder if 2D would be better than VC in any aspects.
which do you prefer?
Turker.
It realy depends on what tools you have. If your using a flight yoke it can sometimes be difficult to pan arround a VC, and quite often some of what you need to get at can't be reached from the VC, in some airliners for example.
If you have a joystick with a POV HAT then panning is easier, but again, sometimes what you need to see is hidden from view, so you need to call up the 2D panel anyway. In modern airliners its not so much a problem as there are minimal things to press or gauges to read as its all done within the "glass" cockpit, but on classics, the 2D is often much more flyable and engaging. Remember many of the classic aircraft where designed to be flown by a flight crew of 3. If the systems / panel of a model has been done well and not simplified too much, it would be impossible for a VC pilot to fly the aircraft correctly. Obviously thats not a problem with the modern stuff. Small aircraft on the other hand lend themselves well to the VC. I guess it comes down to personal choice.
Well I sometimes think about using HJG models, as they look cool except VC, something I only used for years thanks to ActiveCamera 2004. I was way too OK with Dreamfleet 727 plus its VC,except sometimes needed FE panel popup. Yet it looks way more fun than still 2D view. However no recent models appear for oldies, and I saw these goodies. DC9 will be my next movement I think (I like MD80s too!)
Thats why I also look for your opinions. thanks for replies.
I do all my flying using the vc I find the 2d just too unrealistic with a fixed view, I know the sky still pans round but this makes it look worse IMHO. 2d comes into its own with fixed side views say on a triple head system
I have a multi monitor setup. One screen for the overhead, another by the side for autopilot and radio and recently another screen primarily for the fuel systems on the comet. The VC is on the main screen and there is little to touch on it anyway , the heading on the hsi and clicking on the atc which wont move from the main screen anyhow. I use a yoke and it has a top hat (saitek) so paning around is fine for admiring the views
cheers

I only use the VC if I have to and even then, I have my second hat switch programmed to show me the left, right, left front and right front INSTANTLY as panning is totally unrealistic because it is too slow. I does not matter how you set the panning rate...In real life you can move your eyes and head at the same time to give INSTANT change of view. Panning is totally unrealistic
Each to his own...sometimes I fly for a bit from Spot view...Really unrealistic but useful for screenshots
For all my aerobatic displays I fly from the 2D cockpit just as it is with no adjustments. However, for some low inverted flight, I need to move my seat down in Little Bandit by two clicks to keep the horizon ahead in comfortable view, otherwise it goes off the top of the windscreen.
