Anyone use INS??

Post by Vc Ten »

Hi All :hello:
Not sure if this is the best section in the forum to post this but hope I get a few responces ;)
Now the sim has settled down a bit after my problems with win 7 etc I am starting to fly some longer legs
The radio can be a chore inputing the frequency and heading as you go along but just flying from the gps is somehow cheating So was looking at some other way of navigating that did not requre constant attention and allowed some time out of the seat on longer trips
Had a look some time ago at the Delco Carrosel but thought at the time was way too complicated, I was finding it difficult enough to just to fly the sim
Anyhow revisited it the other night and downloaded the INS. Been looking throught the documentation, its comprehensive to say the least. Also downloaded DM's vc10 as its setup for the instrument ( wont be flying it though, only 2d :hide: )
So questions are Anyone fitted the gauge into any other models ?(would like it in the comet)
and if anyone flys with it va or otherwise
Cheers
Dale

By the lack of replies doesnt look like
Installed the gauge into David's 1-11 Had to do a bit of cutting and carving to the cockpit panel No only joking it fits nicely on my touchscreen monitor next to the radio

Not sure best how to use it yet . The instrument requires waypoints entering in long lat it can store 9 but more can be entered in flight as the previous waypoints are passed and can fly a route without any loaded msflight plan HoweverIf no route is generated in ms flight planner theres no Atc which spoils the reality also if the route in the INS deviiates from an installed ms flight plan atc will try to bounce you back on course unless its a vfr plan (then theres no vectoring to finals)
Flew today from man to venice by generating a ms flight plan and then going to map and picking points along the route and entering the coordinates into the ins, Took off and headed for the pink line on the satnav, then when close switched over to INs nav and let it manage the flight all the way to the descent and final vectoring
All good fun
Dale

I don't think what we fly had INS *-) and if later versions had them fitted it is out of our time :dunno:

I've never used GPS nor the custom-sounding INS you mention and (so far) have never felt the need to go beyond VORs and occasional course corrections -- but maybe that'd still be too fiddly..?
On longer trips, the LOC VOR setting on some/most autopilots might be worth a try..?

Would have thought vc10 would have been fitted out with inertial navigation especially on their transatlantic fleet
Dm's model will use the gauge if installed in flightsim. But agree I doubt it was installed on our shorter range fleet or pre 70s where problem of lack of navaids was no issue, but cost was
I am building myself up for some long haul flights now the sim is stable and it got me thinking how you navigate across north atlantic without just pointing it in the general direction or just flicking the switch from nav to gps and letting it get on with it itself Would be interested to hear from any long haul specialists or maybe any real pilots could comment
Cheers

If the VC 19 had INS then DM would have fitted it I'm sure *-)

I don't think it had it

Hi,

I use INS exclusively, even on shorter trips across land where VORs and NDBs are available.
Once you get good grip of INS, it is actually not that complicated. It adds to the fun of flight simming to type in new waypoint during flight (I think). However, in order to maintain some sort of historic fidelity, I only use it on aircraft that had INS in the real world. I don´t think that BAC 1-11 used it. The longhaul VC10, 707, 747, DC8 and Concorde had it. I am not sure if the Comets used INS in the 70´es and 80´es by for instance DanAir *-)

For long trips across the ocean, I use Vroute to find the route and its waypoints. For other trips across land, Rfinder can be used.

Best Regards,
Anders

When I used to fly VC10s for RAFVirtual I used INS and thought that once you have the hang of it it's very good, likewise with Concorde.

The DME update takes a bit to work out, and I made myself a checklist for it but I enjoy the navigation more than the flying so it was ideal for me.

Stick with it!

Cheers for the replies guys :)
Tried both vroute and routefinder Like vroute as I can save to pln files and input to fsx so atc knows whats going on and will show the route on gps also waypoints are in degrees mins decimal so easier to input into delco
Just completed flight venice to man using ins and otherthan a miss entered waypoint all was fine
will get used to it a bit more in 1-11 (a/c im quite familiar with now) before trying it out on a few longer legs in the comet :excited:
