Hows things all, what’s new?

Post by gordon-in-aberdeen »

Bet I fooled you all into thinking I’d disappeared off the planet (not that you’ve probably missed me really). 8)

After an absence from flight Sims and many other leisure activities (basically we inherited a dog that wants walks all the time and the PC died on me) I’ve managed to sort out what I needed on the IT front to get going again.

I noticed some previous discussions re hardware in Virtual Spanner and wondered if any of you are interested in the following not cheap but surprisingly capable portable solution I manage to get running. After months of saving and investigating things I bought a much reduced price a 15” MacBook pro with a 2.4Ghz i7 chip, 4Gb Ram and a 1Gb AMD Radion 6770M Graphics chip. It was Last season’s top model so still very fast, but now much cheaper. I know, still not the cheapest solution by a long way, but I’ve reasons for needing both windows and Mac OSX on a portable solution, so it ticked all the boxes I needed in one machine for over £300 less than it was the previous month, so for once I found I could stretch to something interesting and capable at the same time.

I transferred my full boxed copy of Wndows 7 Pro 64bit from the dead PC to it as a second OS and started rebuilding all the simulator software. It actually runs FS9 with sliders fully to the right & FSX with everything set as high no problem even though it’s a mobile setup rather than a desktop. It also runs Railworks with good frame rates too, much more demanding on the hardware even than FSX, so I’m happy I’ve a PC that I can do my siming on without resorting to hiding in the spare room.

Anyway, back again, with a good FSX setup now (old PC struggled with it anyway), so looking forward to getting back into the hobby. Anything interesting in the FS oven these days? I’ve been out of touch for months…

Welcome back Gordon. :hello:

I put together and maintain an online spreadsheet for SOH. It lists all the current freeware native FSX aircraft and stands at 284 entries at the moment! I think that might help you find what you've missed in terms of freeware during your absence. The list can be found here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... n_US#gid=0

TIP
If you click on 'View' on the top menu and then select 'List' each column will then have a search box above Row 1. This enables you to search by column to refine your results.

For example, if you wanted to find all available de Havilland aircraft then click in the search box in the 'Manufacturer' column and select 'de Havilland' as your choice and it will display only de Havilland aircraft. Select 'All' in the 'Manufacturer' column to reset the lists or alternatively hit the 'Back' button on your browser.

Likewise selecting 'Dave Garwood' in the 'Author/Creator' column will return all Dave's fine pieces of work.

Hope that helps.
Larry
