updating xp 2002 home edition

Post by airboatr »

In the interest of a quick responce may I request the thread not be moved to the virtual spanner.

I have an old laptop I'm giving to a friend that I had to format th hhd.
I've installed xp 2002 HE , and have authenticated it with MS genuine yadayada.

Can anyone (hi Wintell :hello: ) tell me what is the first update would be to make the updates thereafter go as fast as possible to the point where windows auto updates can take over and finish it up.

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe,

Download WinXP SP3 first

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=24

Download the full file from the link above rather than doing Windows update. ;)

Expect it to keep updating for a couple of days Joe. Although many updates are supposed to be cumulative.. adding one will trigger another. No sweat though ;)

Running into several issues now Dave, Ben

KB says I must have SP1a or SP2 installed before SP3. And infact when I tried installing SP3 I got an error message saying " in effect " no way jose.

I'm trying to install sp1a now. The installer has unpacked the files and the setup wizard is parked on the "inspecting your current configuration" dialogue box. I'm sat here waiting for sone indication it is indeed working but so far not even the blue load bars are displaying.

Where's Colin's hammer?

Just to keep you apprised of the WIP I've received a SP1 error message.

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update. inf.
Make sure the Crypographic service is running on this computer.

Well mr. Updater error message. It is running and you are set to interact with the desktop.

So what do you have to say for yourself? Huh?
Go on!

Joe,

Just read a Technet article and you can go straight to SP2 and then apply SP3.

SP2 is here...

Thanks Mate

But Ill have to wait a bit. You see I rebotted the machine and its in process of checking file system on C:

It's checking for consistency

Opps

File record segment 10756,10757,10758,10759 unreadable
fixixing index $I30
.... sorting
.. 86% completed

......... deleting index
Replacing various invalid security id's..
.........

It must have replaced thousands by now.

Good heavens mate! It's pouring rain, lightning thunder, my world is coming to an end...
