A chap I know who lives in Cheadle told me about a time when he was returning home from work one night (in the 60's or 70's I believe) and was driving along Ringway Road approaching the end of the runway at Moss Nook. From his right hand side he heard a huge roar and out of the darkness came a DC 8 at roof top level, it's undercarriage skimming the runway light gantries as it struggled to get airborne!
The following day he asked a mate of his who worked at Ringway what had happened and apparently someone had mistaken kilograms for pounds when refuelling. As a result the DC 8 was grossly overweight.
