Nice comparisons, Dave.

For me it's quite simple. I have the JF Real Scenery package complete (about £100 at the time of purchase) and I usually have it installed.

I also have the aforementioned UTX + GEX + UK2K VFR Airfields 1,2 & 3 also installed.

When I am flying purely VFR and forbid myself GPS and any destination airfield beacon (currently typing up such a tour HERE with loads yet to come) I activate the photo scenery with the VFR Airfields, Farmstrips and remainder using Alf's Airfields.

For everything else I deactivate the photo scenery and switch on UTX et al.

Best of both worlds :)

I will buy this if it looks good. Have to wait for some HD videos or a demo to decide, I guess. It'll simply be another option. It may replace UTX in the UK (but UTX is used for much more than that).

Something has been nagging me about this and I've just realised what it is. Look at the autogen houses in FTX England and the overriding majority are white.. almost without exception. This may be fine for seaside resorts but it won't work quite so well in the West Midlands  We have white houses in the West Midlands.. I have one next door as it happens but here at least, it's the exception not the rule. I wonder if the release version will be different. We shall see later when Peter posts some shots I guess (although he lives by the sea so most of his houses may well be white anyway and he won't notice)

Oh Dear - that's a bad blue, cobber!
One thing that strikes a visiting foreigner to the Midlands (including the youthful me from Scotland) is all those sooty, dull red brick buildings.

Do you think now would be a good time to point this out to them?

I think I'm going to wait until the DVD version is released, but for me it is a certainty that I will purchase the package. Having 'migrated' to FSX from FS2004, I have a number of Orbx scenery titles and am very pleased with the way that they run on my new system.

Although I have the Horizon GenX V3 scenery, I think I will still use this for local VFR flying (Devon and Cornwall) and then use the Orbx scenery for flights further afield. (I tried Treescape, but after one day deleted it as didn't think the trees were true to life - seemed a little over scale and wrong colours - so installed the FS2004 freeware files that work a treat).

I like to have a bimble over the countryside that I know very well, and to see it as I see it twice a month for real. Think that the Orbx will be good for exploring parts of the countryside that I don't know well (that my wallet won't stretch too for the ever increasing avgas prices!). BUT then again, I might like it so much that it becomes a replacement.

Time will tell.

Best wishes,

Martin

Edit: Just seen a screenshot of Lands End airfield and runways are hard and not grass - not good at all!! :(

There was a screenshot highlighted over at Sim Outhouse that showed some nice high rise tower blocks in Birmingham...with gabled roofs

I'll probably buy this at some point for P3d, but I don't want to get distracted at the moment :worried:

Didn't you know that Brum is famous for it's gable roofed high-rises?? We have them in Bloxwich too

If Ozzie dollars $40.95 equated to 95p.. I'd buy more than FTX England

Dunno why the house colours struck me as odd. Flying around Tazmania and PNW, you tend to take it for granted that it's 'abroad' so anything goes. Had a final look through all the screenies of England yesterday and thought how nice it looked but.. *-) D'oh.. white houses! :wall:

Martin.. I've always thought the Treescape trees were off scale too mate but tried to reason that without anything as reference (eg, buildings close by) it was probably an illusion. I parked up on the common behind my house then went outside for a goof and when you look at the GenX tiles underneath, it seemed the houses would have to be a darned sight bigger than the tile suggested to be in scale with the trees. That said, without them, I find the countryside just too boring.. like being back in FS8 or 9 with VFRPhotoscenery installed 8) Having no autogen with GenX is probably one of the main reasons I found the FTX demo's so interesting. I'm not quite sure if I'll be able to tolerate white houses and high-rises with gabled roofs though *-)

EDIT: Cost is £26.88 by the way.. download size is 3.12gig which seems quite reasonable. I think ES GUE was bigger than that. Also, an edit on the pricing I gave for the GenX/Treescape parts earlier. All pricing at Earthsim is ex VAT (@20%) for some goddam reason so all the prices I quoted need 20% banged on :|
