HS748 Engine Failure

Post by PaulC »

Evening all,

I've landed following flight three of my TRs on the 748. Halfway through my flight I had an engine failure on the right engine.

I tried all the emergency drills but it wouldn't restart. After about ten minutes of cross-checking everything and getting all the electrics transferred, I gave up, fully feathered and continued to Sumburgh on one engine, pulling off (even if I do say so myself) a pretty slick one engine landing with, according to FSAirlines data -88fpm touchdown :)

However, as the wheels contacted, the engine started. Now I was confused as to why it went out in the first place but even more so as to it restarting. *-)

Conditions at failure were;

FL120, IAS 205, Fuel trim 100%, RPM 14200, TGT 750c. De-ice to SLOW.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul :hello:
I had a simlar engine failure the other week on 748 I was messing around with the fuel trim at the time so didnt think it was due to anythng else other than pilot error  Problem was like yourself I was unable to restart, eventually giving up and plodding on to gatwick on just the one engine. On landing the failed one restarted as i pulled off the runway :dunno:
Dont know if this helps but youre not on your own

Hmm.. pants! This'd be easier to track down if it was FS9.. I'm really not sure how the old girl reacts to FSX *-)

Did you have the fuel heaters on Paul? This is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head *-) Even so.. for the engine to re-ignite as soon as the gear touched is mighty odd.. not an FS9 trait either *-)

I didn't have the heaters on, no, and upon reading through the manual after I'd tried the restart checklist, I saw that under -20c it suggests heating on. It was -21c OAT at the time. I then flicked it on but no restart. I only lost the one though, not both which if it was fuel issues due to temp, you have thought both would have gone.

I know Fraser did lots of clever stuff with failures on the Viscounts, so it might be similar on the 748, but I seem to recall a problem with relighting in FSX. I'll give this a go later on and see what happens :)

Hi Paul..

As a rule of thumb, I generally have the fuel heaters on if I suspect the temp is going to drop below +5degC which in real terms, is pretty much all the time in this country. It's part of my PFC for both the 748 and 780 :) Hope this keeps you out of trouble ;)

Hi Chaps,

I took the 780 up as I must have let my type rating on the 748 lapse. I followed the procedures, but left the fuel heaters off. The other difference to Paul's figures is that I had to go up to 17000 ft to get the OAT down to -21 this morning.

I'm currently at 17600ft over EGOD and what I did notice (in the 780) is that as soon as the OAT hit -21the down arrow on the panel selection icons started to flash yellow.(2D Panel) As soon as I went in and switched the heaters on, the arrow stopped flashing. I suspect Mr McKay has included some clever code that will randomly block one of the fuel lines if you don't have the heaters on below these temperatures. The flashing icon in the 780 panel is a nice reminder to do this. The blockage wont happen straight away and I suspect he's built in some sort of randomisation (he's done something similar on the Viscount). If nothing else it just goes to show how good his panels are, I lovem

The 748 is one of my favorite gliders.  I've yet to complete a flight with both engines running.
