Hi Ian,

Well as a 100% non believer that was an interesting read for both sides of the debate,

I am 72yrs this October but when i was 14yrs my Nan passed away and i was washing in our bathroom one nite not long after she had gone and turned around and saw her gliding down the stairs grey hair flowing behind her without a sound [ Except for my wife i have never spoken about this to anyone] and typing this now it makes my back tingle!!

Now it could have been that she was on my mind at that time and we lived in a house then on a corner and now and again a car headlights would swing around the walls [there was not that many cars around back then} that may have been it but i still think i saw her, Who knows :dunno:

All the Best,

Roger.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Well, I'm obviously not the only one who's had spooky stuff happen!
As a teenager, I worked at many locations as a casual fill in assistant with a large greengrocer.
One shop was managed by a Spiritualist. There was argument between her and another of her staff about her beliefs. He closed his argument with "OK, give us a message from the spirits, that comes true, and I'll join you."
Kate said, "Well, they do have a message for Mike" (HAHA HA & HO HO HO) "Be vey careful on your motorbike"
That same night, a van slowed in front of me, and due to a broken tail light, his left indicator lit as he applied the brakes. I pulled out to pass him as he was obviously going into a driveway on the left, but he turned right into an intersecting street with no further signal. I never found out whether Kate's tormentor joined the religion, as it was six weeks getting the bike mended, and I was not sent out to her shop again. *-)

This was an absorbing read, and all I can say is that I totally agree with Ian.I just wish that I could articulate a discussion so well!
I would recommend to anyone who hasn't already done so,that they read 'The God Delusion' by Prof Richard Dawkins.Read it with an open mind. This man is totally objective in making his points.I personally believe that this book should given the same status as the bible or any other religious book in all schools. In essence,he doesn't say don't believe in a religion, just look at all the evidence first.
That my ha'pth for what it's worth. No more from me on this subject.Ian knows that my thoughts are with him.EricT
Now at the age where I know I like girls but can't remember why!

Or Christopher Hitchens or Daniel Dennet (Breaking the Spell is a good book to read, very balanced) - check them out of YT. I love how Dawkins looks as if he is about to explode whenever anyone queries evolution.

Hugely entertaining and absorbing stuff! I must admit various bits of "Life of Brian" was running through my head an awful lot when reading through that lot. Not being a Monkey myself I totally agree with your arguments Ian and was mightily impressed by your open mindedness (Richard Dawkins you aint).

Kind Regards,
Chris

Back again.
Having now read the lot (excluding the links and their associated texts), I must say that you have the patience of a saint, Ian, so you'll fit either camp.
I didn't check the dates of your correspondent's quotes. I did see a recent science programme in which they had observed life being created deep under the sea, from chemicals and electrical impulses. They went on to say how the Universe is teeming with the very same chemicals and electrical forces. They described it rather along the lines of Frankenstein's monster, where the application of energy created life. If I weren't so lazy, I'd Google it and put a handle on it.

EDIT: so far, this is the nearest I could find: http://www.popularmechanics.com/science ... fe#slide-4
