In the olden days, only important people like bankers had a paid day off so it became known as a Bank Holiday. Mere peasants, if they had the day off, were not paid.

It's what you'd call a public holiday and when I worked for Tektronix, an American company, the time sheet was entered as holiday time as opposed to our own entitlement which was entered as vacation.

Self employed is always a hassle.

Many folks find themselves with a day off they'd rather take some other time, but they are at least paid.

Self employed tradesmen often have to take the day off...no pay :(
