Silent Hunter III

Post by DogTailRed2 »

Does anyone still play Silent Hunter III?
It's an old game which I've had for a while. I dug it out a few weeks ago and started to get into it again (once I had figured out how to get it to run on Win 7 64).
Of course you play as the Germans but this version is the best of the SH games. You just have to get over sinking allied shipping. B-)
Then I found the Silent Wolves free upgrade.
All I can say is wow!
Anyone who has this game, or is thinking of giving it a go and likes simulations should definitely give the upgrade a go.

BTW to get it to work on win7

1. A clean install from disc
2. Patch to 1.4b
3. Replace some files
4. Upgrade with the GW gold upgrade
5. Set you screen res to 1024 x 768

Install

Patches (you only need 1.4b)

Upgrade

Then it should look like this

Just off to do a test dive to 200 meters!

Hi DTR ,

Yes an enthralling sim i played 3 for a long time but SH5 is great as well,

I still go on SH3 now and again and just practice sinking those five ships at the start, for it's age i think the graphics are very good, more so when you shell those cargo ships and manage to get a direct hit

For anyone interested there is on Youtube "lets play silent hunter " a lot of what and how do play 3/4/ and 5,

Like you say DTR you play on the German side but loosing 30,000 seaman was terrible, Das boot is a great film if anyone has not seen it,

Cheers,

Roger.

You have to admire the bravery of those U Boat crews. Yes they caused a lot of harm to us during the war but paid a far greater price. The only force that suffered similar casualties was RAF Bomber Command, which in itself makes you think.
To be at 150 meters in a dark U Boat taking water and being hunted by several destroyers. Possibly the bravest of the brave.

I've got SH3 with the Grey Wolves upgrade and and SH4 and still occasionally load them up.

Of the two I agree that SH3 has the best game play and the sense of claustrophobia seems more real than SH4. I never tried SH5 as most reviews I read panned it.
