My favourite recollection of a Herald was at Angouleme in ( I think ) 2007 when a yellow Herald got himself mixed up with the Touring car race on the warm up lap, which was led off by an E type Jaguar with a Cooper S following and then this poor bugger in a Herald who had obviously got on the street circuit by mistake. How we all laughed !
We weren't laughing so much when as they came round on the first lap he was in the lead, which position he retained until about 2/3 race distance when, sadly, the rear suspension collapsed . It was stunningly quick, and had a 1300 engine with twin 40 DCOEs and other mods

Ah happy days, I recall being chased by a police Triumph PI through the streets of Chelmsley Wood as a teenager on my moped... they were not very good at going down back alleys
Old cars are like old airliners, loads of variety all looked different and had bags of charachter, unlike modern cars and planes that seem to be clones of each other

I went to Alderney once where at the time the standard of cars was below that you'd find in an average scrapyard.
We go into a conversation with an old lady and after saying out goodbyes left for a walk around the island to pass the morning.
Not far down the road there was a too and it was the lady offering us a lift.
She took us to the end of the island to walk from there in her neat up rust Herald
There was a knack to opening and closing the door...barely perched on the front hinge it was only held in by the lock. She suggested I sit with my legs well apart
...because there was a hole in the floor and the rest of the floor was not very strong
...unforgettable.
It ran OK and sounded fine...just falling apart

Sounds like it requires a visit to Wesley's workshop. He could repair most things. He managed to keep his wifes Herald going, despite the treatment she gave it.

This was 1976 so I think it will have faded completely away but now

1976, during that heat wave summer some may recall, our Triumph PI's (Met) all died in the heat, the petrol (gas) was evaporating before it could be combusted. It was a while before they were fitted with refrigeration units in the trunk (boot) to get them going again. Some of us thought it great because we had to resort to using the Traffic Dept Rover 3500's which we all thought were superior in many ways (except in the wet) and comfier, the Triumph being akin to riding a plank.tonymadge wrote:Ah happy days, I recall being chased by a police Triumph PI through the streets of Chelmsley Wood as a teenager on my moped... they were not very good at going down back alleys
