REX + Overdrive for FSX/P3D half price!

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps :hello:

Just a quick HU to say that Rex+Overdrive for FSX/P3D is half price over at FSPilotshop at the moment. I doubt I'll be able to run it but for a smidge under £25 (I paid a fiver for the disc copy too) inc postage, I'm gonna give it a try. Download is 8.7gig which is why I ordered the disc too otherwise I'd be using nearly 9 tenths of my montly allowance in one shot  If you go for the download only.. it's a tad under £15 which is a good price me thinks ;)

So much to buy, so little money :(
Not only can't I get this, but Active Sky 2012 is 30% off, and out of reach. Special finishes Monday, pension comes Thursday.
Hope it runs well, Dave. ;)

Well.. my backup discs arrived yesterday and it's taken until today for me to be brave enough to put it on. I love the install info which tells you what you should and shouldn't have done.. after the event! 8)

I don't really have a clue how to work it but managed to make this happen..

In all honesty, I lied. I didn't make this happen.. it did it itself :cpu: I must say, the clouds look quite nice and very little frame hit. I wanted to climb above the clouds and take a screenie there but tops must have been above FL300.. perilously close to the Mossies top end. Both shots taken around the FL300 mark :) The screenshots don't do it justice. It looks much better 'in sim' ;)

XLNT Dave! Glad it's working. Does it actually improve the appearance, or just let you customise what you already have? I've not been able to make inland dams and lakes brown, even with REX, they all just look like chunks of blue ocean regardless of my selections.
I'll wait till the next half price sale and jump in.
I need to stock up on stuff...the tech gurus on radio keep telling us that PCs will soon be a thing of the past. :worried:

Hi Mike :hello:

The list of selections is endless.. so much so I doubt I'll ever get to touch most of them. Perhaps the instructions aren't as intuitive as REX would like to think. Perhaps I'm just thick :dunno:

I don't know if those clouds were default or generated by REX. The weather was certainly generated by REX and coverage is far superior to either default and, it has to be said, ActiveSkyAdvanced. I appreciate ActiveSky2012 may be better than it's predecessor (one would hope so) but I don't have that so can't comment.

I've not touched the water yet.. in fact, I've not touched just about everything. When I first opened REX, all the pages looked the same regardless of which tab I hit. Eventually, I realised I had to point REX to FSX (I thought it would have known but it didn't) and the pages started changing. TBH.. it's all a bit much.. very impressive but a bit much. Those who like to fiddle can be kept happy for the rest of their lives

I know exactly what you mean, Dave. I've had it for quite some time, along with the updates and add-ons etc to date, and it was just so much (more than I wanted, to be honest) that I simply read about how to set up the options page - which isn't that difficult - and then made sure the "Download at startup" thing was off, chose my basic needs and a weather station/ICAO code and since then whenever I've used it, I have let it make a random theme.

Always turns out really well (and you can save a randomly created theme if you really like it) and looks great.

I still have no idea about the depth of possibilities, but I'm happy with it.

One minor irritation is the various screens are often slightly too small for the text that is on them - so I can't always read the stuff and have to use some guesswork now and then. Bad form, that, for such a program. I had the same issue with the older version.

Here are some pics I took a while ago...

Thanks for that JD.. I fell less of a dunce now

I agree.. it's not a difficult prog to work.. more a case of where the hell do you start! I'm not quite sure what I expected but I've certainly got more than I bargained for and then some

I'd seen the 'turn weather updates off' note but let it do it's own thing first time. I didn't find the weather updates what I'd call 'seemless' with a text line appearing what seemed like every few seconds followed by a slight pause as it 'clunked' into place but with all the possible combinations.. there's almost certainly a way to turn notifications off which may help the pauses. No doubting it looks very good though and it didn't give my framerates the belting I expected. In time.. I'll probably do as you've done.. pick a theme (or themes) you like and stick with those rather than RW updates ;)

By the way - I highly recommend the ground mist setting. I think it's switched off by default (something about it having some unwanted effect on some computers) but I put it on and it was terrific. I remember especially approaching EGGD early one morning with a Dash-7 and the mist was up to about 500 or 1000ft off the deck, so although you could see a short distance within the mist, once you went above it everything on the 'flat' ground just disappeared under a blanket. It was an excellent navigation test just to touch down on the runway, let alone find the thing.

It was easily one of the best and most exciting flights I've had in FSX.

I'm sure I've got some screens somewhere - have to have a look :)

edit - found some - within the mist (and believe me, this is a 'thin' bit!):

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have taken any shots from above the layer - but here is a slightly less misty one, but still good, in the JS4100:

So that setting would be better for those that like to be able to actually see the runway they are landing on before they get onto it...
