FTX Global Vector Released

Post by ChrisHunt »

Orbx have released FTX Global Vector for FSX, P3D v1 and v2 - £38 and a little bit. Essentially UTX for the world so looks good value of you like Orbx products. Download only from Orbx.

Chris

I advise a read of the Vector support forum before buying Vector. Quite a few issues to be resolved.

Yes, there is a bit of a brouhaha at the Orbx forums concerning Vector. The issue is that in order to get the best out of it, you need to also buy a global mesh at an additional 50 or 60 Euros and this wasn't made clear enough during the pre-release publicity or on the Flighsim Store's purchase page. Once tempers have cooled, Orbx may come up with an offer, be it a refund on Vector or a reduction in the mesh cost. In the meantime, if anyone is considering buying it, be aware of the above.

From what I understand (and the info wasn't exactly secret) Vector was made in conjunction/collusion/cooperation with Pilots software who make some very excellent mesh on a global and regional basis. Though other meshes (some freeware) should ne suitable.

There seems to be four principle problems: bugs (with and without mesh), a number of users are unhappy with what appears to be a statement that third party SRTM based mesh is essential when it was sold on the basis of it not being needed (but would improve the experience), incompatibilities with P3D V2 and finally the lack of a facility to customise elements such as road widths etc.

There are plenty of bugs but this is an enormous undertaking so hardly a surprise. As I see it the complaints about the mesh issue are valid but clouded by the considerable number of bugs; John Venema is robust in his defence of the product and information related to it and his approach has alienated a number of users. Anyhow this has all generated quite a storm on the FTX forums and AVSIM (as you can imagine) so no doubt that has contributed to the somewhat defensive mind-set. I haven't bought it and won't until it improves or perhaps not at all if the P3D version of UTX turns out to be better. Worth remembering, of course, is that FTX Global Vector covers the globe for around £35 so essentially you gets what you pay for.

On the subject of bugs and testing; if the experience of Prepar3D and Vector are anything to go by what on earth are the Beta Testers testing? I don't know about you but whenever I have to test software I have to have a test plan and ensure that testing covers all aspects of the software including trying to break it (often successfully). In my world software that we develop and release must be clear of bugs prior to commissioning although there are always a few (non-critical) that creep in.

Regards,
Chris

I have FTX Global + Vector installed and I must say it is very good indeed, I’m using the mesh that comes with FTX England and Wales but not the full sceneries until they become P3Dv2 compatible, also some free mesh for France, no problems so far ( except the black screens, click spots not working, joystick disconnecting in flight and one or two other small issues but I blame LM for those ) it seems to be catching on, of late, that the punters have to do the BETA work!
Going over to ORBX is like joining some cult religion, you have to give yourself to it completely as it invades the flightsim hijacking textures and autogen as it goes.
Its followers turn on anyone who dares to criticise.
But the plus side is it looks a million dollars, has seasonal textures, the map shows properly, no “post apocalyptic winter textures”, loads as quickly as default scenery and its not that expensive.
Once its all v2 compatible, very soon I’m sure, it should be worth considering.
