You've obviously never had the pleasure of flying Ryanair then Brian.

From the moment you've fought your way to a seat (they're not allocated so imagine the scrum to get near a door), found a place for your bag (usually some way from your seat), placed your book on your lap as the seats don't have pockets, you're a captive. The attendants are sales girls and spend the whole flight trying to sell their captives delicious snacks, superb drinks both alcoholic and non, perfumes and other duty 'free' tat, scratch cards, train tickets to London as it's a long walk from Stansted etc. etc.

How much did Ryanair save by getting seats without pockets? I suppose the idea is to save on cleaning time.

I've never had the 'pleasure' of Ryanair's hospitality but I've heard it said that Ryanair is to customer service what Woodbines were to Winston Churchill.
I do wonder a bit if people pay one star prices but expect five star service but,as I said,I have no experience of them. EricT

That's the point Eric. It's cheap. Despite my only slightly exaggerated description, you don't have to buy anything extra, and as the journeys in my case are about an hour and three quarters I can put up with it. Recently I haven't flown Ryanair much, as Stansted isn't very convenient for me. But now they've started a Bergamo to Birmingham flight I might use them more.

However, neither Ryanair or Sleazy Jet are as cheap as they used to be, especially if you want to take a suitcase. If you can book well in advance it's worth checking other carriers as well. I've found that Alitalia can cost only slightly more than the 'low cost' airlines if you book early and are carrying cases. There it's worth remembering that Alitalia give you a suitcase limit of 23Kgs while Ryanair is only 15Kgs. Ryanair will make you pay through the nose if you go even 1Kg over the limit. Guess how I know.

I recently got an email from Ryanair claiming that they intend to become nicer in the future, with allocated seats and a possible second piece of hand luggage. That will please the ladies who don't regard their handbags as a piece of luggage and computer carrying types as well.

The only problem with booking in advance with Alitalia is will they still be in business when you want to fly, will they have managed to pay their fuel bill.

BA are relatively cheap from Newcastle to Heathrow if you book in advanced, especially if you take a weekend flight, or mid morning, and their customer service is great. If you can be a bit flexible on flight times, they're pretty competitive.
