Last passenger DC10 in uk
Spotted this which may be of interest. I never really liked them, and thought the TriStar much better looking.

Re: Last passenger DC10 in uk
It's rumoured to be going to Bruntingthorpe and preserved. Other reports say it's been sold inj the USA
However, it might be a paer excecise to it's final delivery as with the RAF Dominies.
Well..whatever.
I find it hard to mourn the passing of the type which always seemed to me to be an ungainly beast.
Yes Ben..I agree
The TriStar has style
When the RAF doe retire the tankers there will be about eight airworthy L-1011...in theory, although most of those do not and will never again fly.
The MD-11, (DC 10 made even uglier)
is being phased out by KLM, the last original operator of the type and possibly the last carrier on scheduled pax services.
Even though both the MD-11 and even the DC 10 will be around for some time not much chance of a ride.. Fedex starts retireing the MD-11 later this year and most of their Tens are on the way out. Long term program though
Certainly the 'evening' of large TriJet operations

Hi,
Well it's a good job we are all different as the DC 10 has been my favorite airliner and although there has not been that many DC 10's flying passengers for many years she has been a real workhorse despite some bad accidents mainly due to human error, i'm thinking of the one that lost it's port engine on take off but that was due to aircraft Mantinance and yes the rear doors where a problem but other aircraft types have had their troubles too but the so called "Media" were to blame for a lot of the bad publicity that the DC 10 got,
Still i can a least enjoy flying my DC 10 in the sim.
Cheers,
Roger.

I was never a 'big tin' fan, but this was the one I started off with. It was on sale at JF (the CLS model) so I bought it just for a laugh, a challenge to see if I could actually land the thing without crashing every time. That's 'VFR' flying, of course. Wots a emceepee?
I actually ended up quite liking it - and the sounds on powering up for take-off are magnificent. Then came the INS add-on, which made it more interesting.
The only one I've seen in real life was just a year or so back, doing circuits at Wadders (a KDC-10 of the RNLAF iirc - I asked about it on here), which certainly looked impressive.

Must admit I quite liked the looks of the 10.The only rides I had in them was Manchester via Prestwick to LAX and return in 1981 and before that a flight back from Palma to Luton in 1979.Was due to return on a Britannia 737-200 but due to an ATC strike three flights were consolidated onto a 10.In both years the aircraft was Laker.
Incidently the 1979 flight was very shortly after the grounding of the 10 was lifted following the loss of the port engine at Chicago( I think)
Needless to say that some of pax were somewhat concerned when the penny dropped as to the aircraft type.In my own case, considering that we were already about ten hours late,I had no hesitation about boarding.
I seem to recall that Freddie Laker was against the grounding all along because he said that incorrect engine mounting procedures had been used on the doomed aircraft and in this I think he was correct.EricT

Re: Last passenger DC10 in uk
AA used a forklift to mount the engines and save time.
This slightly strained the mount each time making them progessivelive weaker.
The aircraft should have survived the loss of the engine and intially did. The crew did not know the leading edge slat had been torn off. As they reduced airspeed to the book value the wing stalled without the slat and it flipped onto it's back.

Sweet Jesus, Biman Bangladesh, if there's an airline you don't want to fly on it's them.
Last century I was working in Bangladesh for an oil services company, we weren't allowed to use Biman for internal or external flights. A few months before I got there one had apparently landed short of the runway at Syhlet because the Captain's window demist wasn't working so he was flying an IF approach and the Co-pilot didn't feel empowered enough to point at that a) he could see perfectly clearly and b) they were going to miss. My last flight out of the country was delayed because someone managed to park a Biman DC-10 on the runway at Dhaka international, apparently it is possible to ignore the gear warning alarm...

Hi Eric,
Freddie was right, if my memory serves me right it was to do with the Mantinance crew changing shifts and rushing to get the new engine installed on the port wing they used a fork lift instead of the proper tools and in doing so bent a mounting which resulted in the mounting breaking after take off,
Well i have cheated as i have just looked in one of my books on the DC10 and it was Chicago 25/05/1979 where unfortunately 273 people lost their lives,
As an aside, i have watched most of the programs on Sky TV " Air Crash Investigations" and in most cases [not all] it turns out that these crashes were due to Mantinance of the aircraft,
Cheers,
Roger.
