Horizon VFR scenerey

Post by 233SQN »

Folks

apologies for posting this here, but Playsims support forum is down and their nominated support contact isn't replying.

I've recently re-installed VFR Gen X scenery which all went fine, but the update CD that gives the high res cities won't install, it just hangs up anywhere between 3/4 and 7/8 of the install. I'm sure it could be installed manually, but having spent cubic hours re installing FSX/patches/VFR/treescape/Shawbury etc i don't want to screw it up now!!

Could anyone point me in the direction, or advise of how to install the update manually?

thanks!
Thanks

Colin Bear

Dear me Colin :(

You've gone further down the install route than I'd have done mate. I tend to install FSX/SP's/Acc first followed by GenXv2 followed by the v3 update. When I'm happy that lot is working, I start adding the rest but not before. I think Ben would probably suggest dragging the files off your update disc to your HD and try installing from there. I've never tried this but it seems to work for him. I spent a bit trying to find out why The Western Isles wouldn't auto install some months ago and Ben advised I drag the files from the CD and run the install from there. Before I'd got that far, I twigged I'd not been putting disc1 in first! Grade A Plonker or what

wow what a pain!

thanks for the link to the support forum, seems I'm not the only one having trouble! That said, I have never had a problem before installing it on XP and Win 8 PCs, but this time it's a Win 7 pc, maybe that's the issue?

Anyway, i thought i would just live without the upgrade until I flew over Worcester and found half of it missing, literally! I think the abandoned install of of the upgrade was responsible, so i uninstalled the whole of VFR Gen X and then re installed it followed by Treescape and Shawbury Fields, and no upgrade disc this time. That seemed to do it, except now Iron bridge power station is missing, I'm sure it was there as part of Shawbury Fields?
Thanks

Ironbridge IS part of Shawbury Fields Colin. You don't have UK_ANO_FSX installed do you as Ironbridge is included in that too and you'll end up with smoke and no towers if you don't remove one or layer Shawbury above ANO.

WIn7 isn't the issue either mate. I've had what you've described (areas not there) with WinXP 32-bit before. The only thing I could put it down to was the DVD reader on that particular pc had lost the ability to read that areas DVD correctly. I borrowed a mates DVD and it installed ok. Since.. I've installed GenX using the same (supposedly dodgy) DVD on my i5 system and it installed fine 8)

I had a look at the manual instructions, and whilst I was dragging them off the CD the PC slowed to a crawl, I think it just doesn’t like the disc, might be best to live without the hi res tuff, i don’t recall it being that much better anyway. Bizarrely, despite not installing the update (And not having the 3d model folder... I checked) I can still see some of the 3d models! Cambridge Cathedral (well I assume that's what it is) is there, but Fort Dunlop isnt!

As for Shawbury.. that remains a mystery. I have done a totally fresh install and Shawbury was one of the first addons i re loaded after the VFR stuff, but even with the settings set to "make me bleed" I couldn’t get Iron bridge PS to show, which is shame as it's one of the things all our cdts get to point themselves at when doing their AEF out of Cosford. In the end I de activated Shawbury and installed Power Project add on which works a treat.

This flight sim stuff tests your sanity....
Thanks
