G940 pedal unit servicing

Post by J0hn »

I've had my G940 about 3 years now. I do like it a lot, but the pedal unit had started giving some erratic readings, especially on the toe-brakes, and the rudder, whilst reasonable, didn't feel entirely accurate. Logitech washed their hands of this device some time ago - mistakenly, imho, as it's still easily the best controller for flying helicopter sims.

I spent the afternoon completely stripping it down, cleaning it up and reassembling. There is no book or manual or such-like that shows how it's done, but to be honest, there is nothing that difficult to work out.
Okay, the brakes have a spring system and you need to work out exactly how it goes back together so that it works effectively, once reassembled, but it only took me half a minute to work it out as it's not rocket science. The most important thing to get right is reattaching the pedal units so that the brakes work correctly. My advice - if you're not a confident fiddler, leave them on and clean them 'in situ'.

In fact, you would be wasting your time removing those housings unless, like me, you accidentally pull out one of the plugs that connects to the brake potentiometer. The reason for that, is that the pots are the flat, sealed type - so you can neither disassemble nor clean them.

The rudder pedal pot, however, can be completely disassembled, and I would advise it as mine was very dirty. It sits down there on the carpet all day, every day, and picks up an amazing amount of crud. I wiped the carbon resistor pad with some IPA (alcohol) on a cotton bud, then put a swipe of WD40 on it, before wiping off the excess, again, with a cotton bud. If you're unsure, here is an excellent tutorial video on pots and all you need to know:

The results are amazing. After recalibrating, the brakes are working perfectly, and the rudder is like new. Well worth the effort.

That's great JD, it's nice when it all goes back together and you find it works ;)

I have two Saitek Cyborg 3D flight sticks and one has packed up and the other i am still using after about 10yrs but the hat switch really needs a new one but last week i saw two of the same sticks on E Bay both were up for auction and i do not normally bid for anything but i had a go and got one and lost the other one, so i'm happy as the stick is nigh on new,

Yes there are plenty of flight sticks around but i do like these Cyborg 3D's.

I do not like the mouse and have had three A4 Tech Trackballs over the years but the company have stopped making them so it's hard trying to find any in the UK so i keep stripping them out to keep them going, it's a shame as i have found the same A4 Tech in the USA but for one thing they do not ship outside of the states and if they did the postage would probably be as much as the Trackball!!

Cheers,

Roger.

G940 I wish I could get along with mine but it sits unloved and unused in the basement going on 3 years now. I have never really given it a long term chance, I keep reverting back to my 9 year old Saitek X-52. Do you use the software that came with it? It peeves me and more so SWMBO who goes on about "well that was a waste of $400"

I really must sit down one day and learn to program thru FSUIPC, that may be the way to go. Its all about time.

Roger, I am sure there is a company in the UK that sells trackballs. It is a place that usually trades in Amiga hardware - that's how I found them - but the trackballs they stock are for both Amiga and PC and last time I looked cost £24.99
I was thinking of getting one myself, but had a change of heart as I wasn't sure I would manage it and didn't want to waste 25 quid. I'll look for the link - I know it's in my old bookmarks somewhere.

Alex, I used to use the Wingman software - but it has always been outdated and not very good at it's job, where the G940 is concerned.

I never really had the issues people were complaining about. Or at least, I didn't find them as annoying as some did. I did all the firmware updates as soon as they were available and the actual hardware became my favourite controller since I started simming (1983). I fly the Black Shark, UH-1H and Mi-8 in DCS World with my G940 and it makes a huge difference compared to a non-ffb stick. When I try to use my TM Warthog I end up crashing every time.

Now I rarely ever use the Wingman software - only in sims were it is difficult not to, such as ones which don't accept more than two controllers but have loads of input commands. For all the others I just assign the HOTAS functions in-sim. Luckily in DCS World, you can assign a 'pinky' or 'shift' button, so you get to use all the HOTAS buttons for two assignments. I have an advantage in that I have the two TM Cougar MFDs and a home made Up Front Controller (to which I have attached the G940 pedal unit so that I can use it with other HOTAS), which gives me a huge number of input buttons and switches. The UFC and MFDs alone make up 88 separate buttons.

By the way, I use FSUIPC in FSX and find it works well with the G940, but for some reason I've had lots of problems using FSUIPC and the G940 in P3Dv2. They seem to be fighting each other for control and I often find P3D reassigning controls that I had previously deleted.

EDIT: I'm afraid that shop no longer sells trackballs, Roger, but there seem to be a few on Amazon UK and the odd A4T one on ebay.

Hi JD,

Thanks for looking, i should have bought more of the A4 Tech Trackballs when they were £12 each but of course i did'nt know back then that the company were to stop making them,

It's just me stuck in my old ways! ;)

Cheers,

Roger.

John,
Since you started this thread I decided to the G940 another go *-) so we will see how it goes. Touch wood I think I'm warming to wards it. 8)

At the moment I am avoiding the s/w which in the past has driven me to distraction, and just applying commands using the regular FSX control function.

Who knows of an idiots guide to programming it thru FSUIPC?

Hey Fellas,
Not having a license for FSUPIC I tried the Saitek software to split an axis.. but I couldn't get it to work properly., just the buttons.

Anyone split an axis and actually get it to work in FSX?

Controlers I have
Saitek X52
Saitek Cyborg
Logitech freedom 2.4

Nope back to my Saitek - G940 sucks. It spikes and wanders and is still a pig to program.
