Weather + Turbulence question

How many of you fly GA (or light aircraft if you prefer) with the standard aircraft.cfg pitch, roll & yaw stability settings of 1.0 in the aircraft.cfg in calm weather?
Does anyone change these settings to make flying more challenging? (I've just been doing a small test & wearing in my joystick!)
FS9 & I think FSX, seems to still easily return a turbulence upset aircraft to level flight even with the stability set to 0.25, but it does seem to be a bit nearer what I remember of real world flying.
I know some fly real weather, but as I don't use it, I'm not sure how it affects aircraft with a stability set to 1.0.

Hi Keith :)

It's something I never bother with. If the FD is 'OK', I tend to leave well alone. One thing I DO do is to disable 'AIR' in Accu-Feel as far from making your experience more realistic.. it has the opposite effect. Some aircraft will bob up and down so quickly, there is absolutely no way anything could withstand such forces in RL. In fact, the only time I leave 'AIR' ticked is if a models FD is less than pleasing. Accu-Feel can sometimes make something rotten a bit better :lol: This doesn't happen often though ;)

FSRealWX (it's free) has a place where you can set turbulence levels. It gets pretty lively and realistic in thunderstorms. Look for the red areas on weather radar maps. Then take off from (and return to land at!) the nearest airport or one inside the storm area.

Keith..

I've done 4 quick VA flights this morning to test mods done by Flight Replicas for their Herons. Both flights were done with the realism sliders to the left, clear weather and 'AIR' un-ticked in Accu-Feel. There's an embedded area of turbulence off the north-western coast of Jersey and another pretty much bang on the approach line to Guernsey's 27. It/they had the poor Heron all over the b1oody place and if there were a way to get rid of em, I would. I don't mind this sort of thing with the sliders ramped up or real weather dialled in but still air should be just that.. not something capable of ripping your wings off. All these flights were hand flown which may have had a bearing on the way the model moved around.. having AP engaged does seem to lessen the effect.. but many of these areas are where you would not be under AP.. well, I wouldn't be anyway :wall: :lol:

Whatever.. I wouldn't consider changing the stability levels to cope with these 2 'known' areas as I wouldn't with real weather injected ;)

Dave : most interesting that there is embedded turbulence near to Guernsey 27 . Is this just in FSX or does it apply to FS9 as well ? It actually has a sense of realism for me, in summer anyway. I used to go into Guernsey very regularly, nearly always 27, and on bright sunny days the turbulence from the tomato houses in the last 300 feet or so was really quite intense - you did your shoulder straps up tight !

I'm not sure the same is present in FS9 and I've flown that route many times *-) Both approaches today from Jersey were pretty much identical and I turned on to Guernsey's runway heading probably midway between Sark and the island. This is where you get hit! There are many more knocking around in FSX.. one that springs to mind is on the approach to Inverness rwy 24 where it would also be good policy to 'strap in' :lol:

Just done a quick check around Jersey & Guernsey, & yes in FSX the turbulence is there in those approx positions. I would not call it severe though, just a bit 'bumpy'. Its not there though in FS9. Both weather settings the same, i.e. fine weather zero to 4 kts wind.
Flying my Falcon six (WIP) around there if one does not touch the joystick it returns to S+L immediately.
Must try some wind & input some turbulence & compare it, I seem to remember seeing something also at Llanbedr if a NE is set (In the real world Llanbedr was known for rotating turbulence from that direction - thats not its correct name - can't remember it at the mo!)

Hiya Keith :hello:

I'd imagine the little Falcon would be sent all over the place if the Heron was anything to go by :lol: Do you have dynamic head movement switched on btw? I find this can over emphasise things to the 'enth degree.. it certainly does in the Heron. I usually turn the darned thing off but using FSXBooster switches it back on again and leaves it that way. B1oody annoying :rant: This is one thing the FR Heron doesn't handle particularly well and is especially noticeable on throttle movement. Mike at FR termed it 'Brutal' which is a fair description. Where you normally get a nice, linear forward and backward motion from dynamic head movement.. it is unable to grasp the throttle code on the Heron (mixed rpm/throttle) and 'steps' to match the code no matter how smooth you are with the lever. Writing excessively long code would eliminate it though I don't recall this being an issue with the CBFS Heron in FSX *-) Anyhoo.. that's a by the by. Suffice to say.. I don't think having dynamic head movement 'active' helps with turbulence at all but each to their own ;)

Dynamic head movement made me feel airsick......so its switched off! Its not very realistic anyway I feel, same with G effects ( I always use a g suit!).
