Wish I could read and remember what's going on while CHKDSK is running.. it goes too quick! I'm sure there must be a log saved somewhere to record what it's done but where that might be in Win7, I couldn't say. I do remember it reporting that there were no bad clusters but little else

Chaps, you have to be careful running disk utilities in SSD's. Many that are out there don't take into account that a drive is an SSD, and can do more harm than good.

yeah, CHKDSK has always been a bit strange. Under XP, it would only tell you that it found no problems if it didn't - that is, if it didn't say anything about things like unused indexes / indices. If you ran it on your system drive, it would put a message in one of the event logs (system I think) since that had to run during boot up. Under Win7, it always seems to tell you that it found no problems, even if it listed unused thingies - and I haven't yet found an instance of an event log message.

At work, we used to run it to check the file system integrity on Win2000, and particularly on Vista during that brief loathsome period when we were forced to use it. I still run it on occasion based on the assumption that it does actually check the disc integrity ...

Just as an example, some of us have recommended the use of HD-Tune recently. I've never had any problems with it, but had noted that the latest version dates back something like 5 or 6 years. As such, I only use it for extracting "info" from an SSD (alternatively you can use the firmware update tools for them), but have run the various test parts of HD-Tune of both new and old HDDs with not a single problem ...

I found an Action Centre flag showing red at the bottom RH of the screen so had a look. Apparently, it had run System Maintenance (presumably the CHKDSK which ran on start-up) and reported no errors at all. No bad files, no bad clusters, no bad anything Also, under system details.. it showed 'Architecture: amd64'. What the heck is this about.. the mobo is an Asus P8P67 which is very definitely intel

EDIT: Looking into the Architecture:amd64 a bit further.. I see it's a red herring and purely how Windows reports a 64-bit OS

Yes Dave, AMD were first to market with the consumer AMD chips all those years ago, and sometimes now you will see them referred to in places as AMD64. Maintenance isn't just check disk. There is a myriad of little maintenance tasks Tha get run during the maintenance schedule.

Yes mate.. I saw They all reported clean as a new pin though. Seems like DXDiag. I have never, ever seen that report anything amiss even though something isn't working

Just had a new error when closing FSX.. 'BEX' which I gather is a Branch Exception (though what that is is anyone's guess!)
