A general comment, not directed at Paul's original.

The P-8 strikes me as a very good maritime patrol aircraft,

So we dumped an aircraft that could fly non-stop, no-refuel,
from Kinloss direct to Hawaii, alternatively to beyond Capetown, SA.

Replacing it with one that can't even reach Lisbon ?

We have a Walrus at Yeovilton and a Sunderland at Hendon.. one at Duxford too unless that's the same one Maybe the Russians have something we could buy.. at least they'd be cheap and it wouldn't be a 737!

Ooops....

Someone's taken Boeings official figures

Range: 1,200+ nautical miles, with 4 hours on station (1,381 miles, 2,222 kilometers)

i.e. Operating radius.

Then plugged that 1200 nmi as aircraft range
into the hidden specification table on wikipedia,
which automatically outputs the table's parameters as range.

Now corrected to -
range = 3,781 nmi
which means she'll reach the Congo.



What's frighteningly annoying,
is I'd recognised and forgotten this over 2 years ago.

Hi Dave,

It does seem strange that the P8 Poseidon has a range of 1,200 nm [Lisbon is 1,012 approx from Stanstead] and yet the P8 is based on the 737-700 and the basic model has a range of 3,500 nm,

i'm not clued up on the P8 i must admit but i would have thought the right people could do something about it, fitting fuel tanks? and it will certainly be better than having nothing at all,

I don't think anything will be done until this Scotland vote is over but that is just my opinion.

Personally I'd favour re introducing nice big fat juicy Fairy Gannets, we could use one of the new carriers to stable them
