The missile must have had a very big warhead full of iron rods by the look of some of those pictures.

By the looks of the cockpit section I should think the pilot & Co Pilot new nothing & the rest probably lost consciousness fairly quickly afterwards due to decompression.
I know that Aim 9 & similar air to air missiles have an expanding ring of steel or iron rods that are triggered by a proximity fuse (if you can find the video on you tube of the Jindivik intercepts you can see this quite clearly) so I imagine that air to ground missiles have even bigger warheads & rods.

Try this one - it does shoot one of these down, but otherwise its a compilation of videos taken during firing & training sorties. I was the Hd of Development there until 2004, & was responsible for initiating some of the enhancements & video equipment as was then available in the 90's. TV equipment is quite a lot different nowadays!!!

Just had a run through of it again & it doesn't show what I thought it did - it must be on a CD compilation of real time videos that I have unfortunately for you!
although it might be useful to try looking at any of 'met453' videos as he was a technician at Llanbedr & saved a lot of the tapes from the skip!!!

Certainly the way Sea Dart, which is probably broadly comparable, was explained to me was that it had a bundle of steel rods wrapped round an explosive core, the rods were welded at alternating ends so when the explosive went off you got a rapidly expanding ring of steel.

Thanks for those video links Keith. It was nice to see operations 'from the other side of the fence' as it were as I spent many happy hours in the 80's watching operations at Llanbedr from the sand dunes on Shell Island where we used to camp several times a year.

SkippyBing, Sea Dart was a know killer of Jindivik, I think every firing that we had against Jindivik, it was a one way trip. On the last firing of Sea Dart we had live TV on the Jindi........blackout!
Larry, There are more operational videos on youtube I think, some going back to Firefly days.

The compilation video linked above has some very first air to air video taken with a Sony hand held camera that I think cost £750 in the late 80's - that was where the Jindivik Mk4A was having its final acceptance test flights & the low level sequence was at 50' & 500 kts, I think a lot of faith by the chase pilot there, mind you that Hawk had a rad alt fitted too.

The Shoot down sequence by the Sea Harrier...those shots were taken from a Hawk with a fixed Live transmission TV camera & recorder that was found very useful by other trainee pilots on the ground. When the Hawk was taken away from QinetiQ the TV system was re-engineered to go into the AlphaJet.
