Well, 2.04 seems to be working well. Played quite a bit this evening and no crashes or lockups.

Hi Jon,

yes, I've since learned that, in the last few days.

In fact, someone provided a nice link to a Spectrum page and I now have 3 versions of the original Elite for Spectrum :excited: Not only that, I also have lots of extra info for that, and another game I wanted - the Great Escape.

Not my usual thing back then (I was into Tomahawk and Tornado) but I spent hours playing it. Think I only ever properly escaped once, but got out loads of times, just to be captured, shot or die of hunger!

Hi John,

Elite was definitely the game I spent most time playing on the Spectrum. There was a helicopter ground attack game that I played a bit, I can't remember the name. Could that have been Tomahawk? The name rings a bell.
The other game I played a lot, but nowhere near as much as Elite, was a WWII submarine simulator set in the Pacific. Again I can't remember the name now, but it was quite complex for a Spectrum game.
I really wanted a flight sim but never found one that worked well.

Elite Dangerous looks very good in the videos but my computer isn't really up to it. Even if I changed the graphics card the cpu and RAM only just meet the minimum requirements. :(

Jon

PS The Sub sim was Silent Service: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek.cgi

No wonder it was good it was by Sid Meier!

I remember Silent Service (a friend had it on Amiga) but subs have never really interested me.

Yes, it sounds like you are talking about Tomahawk. It was very advanced for it's time (1985). I still play it now, when I'm in the mood, so it lasted well!

You'd be amazed how well Elite Dangerous plays. I know my PC is pretty beefy, but I get 60fps with VSync on and double it without. Not had a single performance related issue yet.

Last night I had my first proper session (rather than the tutorials) and went on our group's Teamspeak channel. It was really great fun, and the guys kept me in the picture, when I got stuck or needed some info. Really enjoyed it, and have barely scratched the surface.

I think this game will be around for some time yet, so maybe you will feel more confident about it after your next upgrade.

Update 2.0.5 is up, Dave and we get this:
One big issue that the community flagged up was the problem with loading times: some players were experiencing delays with starting the game, in hyperspace and coming out of supercruise. 2.05 is geared directly at ironing out these issues, to make cruising through space a smoother experience.
Really chuffed - every time I come out of supercruise, I'm just waiting for the crash.
