Nene Jet

Post by littlemike »

Has anyone done the flying dumpling in its Nene jet configuration G-AJPH. It delivered a letter to Bleriot's widow and son at Le Bourget on 39th aniversary of the cross channel flight. Very important little plane, ignored worlds first.

Hi Mike. :hello: I think I can safely say that it's never been built. :( I've only come across the prop variants. The landing gear animations for the jet would be a designers nightmare, I bet.

I swear someone here had it on their list of 'things to make'.. in fact I'm sure that at least 2 people had it on their list but sadly, no.. it never got made :( I'm equally sure that we on this side of the pond recognise the importance of the Nene Viking.. its just the ROTW who choose to ignore it ;)

Yes :agree:

I did and also part did the Tay Viscount which used a similar undercarriage, but, Dave, you may remember we couldn't get any info on the gear from Vickers or anyone else.

This made both projects non starters

Yes indeed.. the undercarriage is something only Vickers could have put together.. probably in one of their shipyards

It would appear in this picture that the undercarriage retracted aft?

All I know is the it possibly used two swift nose wheel units side by side and the Viscount set up was based on the Viking. It could have been mounted back to front. There is just not enough information on it. Even published references and models have been based on guesswork.
