Finally got round to seeing your video. :)
I thought it was going to be about the oncoming van, when you mentioned that you didn't realise that the microphone was on. I was preparing my ears for technicolour language. :-O

PS, Nigel, you didn't answer Kevin's question about your camera type/specs. :|
We haven't got all day, you know!
Cheers, Mike.

Hi Chaps, finally made it to the library.

Eric, many thanks for your observation regarding my accent, for many years I was not sure waht type of accent or dialect I had. many years ago when having a discussion with work colleagues when in haulage, regarding different accents I asked what mine sounded like. One replied with an accentuated tone.... "Too posh old boy"!! :poke: Have to say that I was horrified when I found that the voice recording was on as I have to admit I hate to hear the recorded sound of my own voice...Just sounds so different, if you know what I mean!! :worried:

Keith, enjoyed reading of your experiences driving 3 speed crash gearboxed cars, and of the type of brakes used. The only type of vehicles with crash gearboxes I drove were of the HGV variety and on some, if you got the timing wrong on changing up or down, you could not get the gear in unless you re-matched the revs. :wall:

OK, coming onto types of cameras' I have the DOD LS460W, I had one of their cameras previously then decided to buy one of their latest models however, I had to send it back on three occassions due to faults with the imagery and the replacement had a GPS fault that meant my road speed was not accurately recorded. The distribution company HDigital Eye (who are very good) advised me to wait until they received a new batch of cameras and sent me my present one which is brilliant.

There are many car cameras on the market and can be a nightmare choosing which one you want. You can pay anything from £30 to £200 plus, it all depends on what you want from it. For those interested in buying one then I would highly recommend visiting DashCamTalk. I had joined their Forum when I found that I had problems with the DOD and wanted a second opinion. The site gives you all the information thatyou need regarding these cameras and they will even advise if you join the Forum on the best product you can buy if you have a strict budget. My advice is if you do go for a camera make sure it can read number plates and has a date and time stamp which would be important in the event of an accident and if driving at night be sure that it has reasonable recording abilities in low light conditions also make a note of the type of camera you want then view it on YouTube by putting the product into the search video. Blow the link for dashcamtalk I have posted 2 videos, the first one is of the old camera with the GPS fault but teh only one that I have night time recording on, the second is my current car camera. They are both in HD though I have always found that playing back on computer the quality is compromised by the pixelations but when I play on the TV with the HDMI connection it is just like watching professional footage.
Having problems getting video uploaded, please be patient.

FWIW ...

I recently decided that I wanted a dash cam as well. Started by checking the Which (UK magazine) article and then youtube videos for the magazine's "best buy" - ended up watching a large set of Russian dash cam footage (some absolutely incredible scenes there). Anyway, the result was that I bought a Nextbase 402G from Amazon and have been testing it out for the last 8 days. The results are extremely disappointing !

Generally, it's a great picture but sometimes mine shows a matrix of flickering white spots as if the scene was shot through a wire mesh then the dark image of the mesh was removed from the picture. Yesterday, I discovered that these are far less noticeable when viewing the movie through Quicktime under OSX instead of through the Nextbase video viewer ...

As Nigel said, a key thing is that you can read number plates on the image. With mine, you have to be no more than a car's length from the vehicle in front before you can read it. Not because of poor image quality, but because on the model I chose the lens has too much of a wide angle view resulting in the recorded images of vehicles being so much farther away than they were in real life.

Finally, there's an intermittent crackling / scratching noise on the soundtrack sometimes, and the camera's self levelling function means that "level" has around 3 degrees of list to starboard, and, in the recording mode I'm currently using, the picture keeps showing brief flashes of parts of the image with different exposures or changes of colour ...

Needless to say, this one's going back to Amazon (one of the reasons I bought there instead of in a shop). I'm tempted to replace it with a 302G, which IIRC has a slightly longer focal length lens, but I can't check this because Nextbase have "updated" their website and technical details like that are no longer present. Having just had a quick look at Dashcamtalk, it's annoying that they only seem to list American models and the Nextbase range seem to be absent - I couldn't see any there that looked the same even if they had a different name.

By the by, I almost suggested that Nigel was using a Nextbase cam because the images he posted look so much like the ones I get from the piece of junk that I currently use.

Ro

Hi Ro,

There are many diiferent types of dash cams on the market but I got mine through HDigitEye in England. They are the main distributors for DOD Cameras who are based in Taiwan it is not as you suggested a Nextbase.

http://hdigital-eye.com/

The cameras listed in DasmCam Talk are not all American, there are British, Chinese to mention a few.

Sorry to hear of your problems but I would certainly ask for a refund but have a good look at the market and be beware as it is a minefield if you do not do your research first. I have been caught out once and had a bit of trouble with the DOD but all is now sorted and working well.

Regards
Nigel.

Sorry for this but..

I have to say that I find the idea of having a dash-cam a little.. well.. odd. OK.. if you're driving through Switzerland on holiday and want to show friends and family the stunning views, that's cool but to have it switched on to go shopping.. it's as if you're waiting for something bad to happen.. even inviting it maybe. If anyone is that worried about getting hit, perhaps a cheaper option would be to sell their car (making a few quid).. this would also save on petrol/diesel, road tax, insurance and not least of all.. be friendly to the environment. Then.. catch the bus! More and more buses have cameras fitted (pointing inside and out) and are covered by something like £80m insurance (double-decker, 80pax at a million a shot).

This is in no way a personal knock at anyone. I just can't see the point of feeling it necessary to have one of these things.. unless you're a bobby in a patrol car towit the footage can be sold to programmes like 'Police, Camera, ACTION' thereby earning valuable revenue for our hard pushed Police forces :cpu:

I predict (I have crystal balls) that in the not too distant future Insurance companies will insist upon cameras - possibly front and rear to assist them in denying claims.... ooops settling claims. https://youtu.be/kO2R_DDZPCM
