Congratulations!

Post by nigelb »

Word has filtered across the pond to these Colonies that congratulations are in order! England won the ashes (finally.) I would give you the score but I have to confess, it has been around 55 years since I picked up a cricket bat and I have forgotten how the game is scored.. I think it is a little more complicated than how we scored as nippers. Runs I understand but not sure about wickets, which to me was the thing you stood in front of and defended with your bat.. I also recall "googley" which was in use long before Google stole it.

Oh, , Mike I'll buy you a beer to cry into! Fosters? :hide: Guday mate!

Hi Nigel,
Sorry I missed yours when I was posting "Scottish accent? etc", which I wrote after watching the videos.

You can make that a VB thanks, my tastes have changed. ;)Yes, Congratulations to them, well played! :agree:
Cheers, Mike.

Mike, the Fosters suggestion was a little tongue in cheek sarcasm. Not sure we have VB here but if I do find it in the imported beer section, I will certainly drink a few for you. ;) .

 :guinn: :guinn: :guinn: :guinn: :guinn: :guinn: :: :$

Oh dear, that was the whole six-pack!

The most important aspect to grasp is 'Australia 60, all out'  . Whereas England were 391 for 9 Declared (first innings).

So, Australia lost 10 of their 11 batsmen for the accumulation of 60 runs. England achieved 391 runs for the loss of 9 batsman. In declaring, they decided that 331 (391-60) was a target Australia were unlikely to achieve in their second 'innings', therefore England chose not to play their last 2 batsmen, in order to put Australia back in to bat, so that England could (hopefully) get them all out again without having to bat for a second time themselves.
In England, we score by stating the number of runs for the number of batsmen, Australia. I believe state it the other way round.

Oh crikey, this is getting complicated and could take me all night.

Suffice to say, Cricket is by far and away the greatest game on the planet.

Only the most civilised countries play Cricket. No segregation of fans, breaks for lunch and tea and if you're doing it properly (check out any village Cricket match), the two teams (along with wives/girlfriends and each teams committees organisers etc) will share tea and sandwiches and possibly the odd beer, after the match (provided, by the hosting team).

Sadly, this is becoming less used in England (though it remains a Cricketing term). I'm hearing far more 'thrown a curve ball' than 'bowled a googly', which essentially mean the same thing.

Finally, I'll also buy Mike a beer.
When the pendulum swings again (as it will) and Australia are on top, I'm pretty sure Mike would offer to buy me one. Anything else 'just wouldn't be cricket old chap'.

So, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to bowl a maiden over ;) .

Regards

Kevin

Actually the matches were broadcast on a fairly new cable channel "One World Sports" I don't know how many Colonials were watching at the early hour they were broadcast but I did watch some of it. Oh, wow - I just checked and a repeat broadcast of the last test match is being rebroadcast NOW at 4am EDT! Complete with an analysis of how big an upset this was,

Very helpful,, thanks Kevin. I had forgotten what an "Over" was because I do remember we did not bother with that nuance as kids. LBW I knew because that was how I usually made an out and in general, was a call that often provoked controversy and heated discussion... Due to a shortage of suitable players (no girls allowed, a silly rule) we only used one batsman and one set of wickets. I should remember more of he rules because my father used to umpire for the Aircraft Research Association;s company team when we lived in Bedford.

Oh, no! Americanisms creeping into cricket? That is just not cricket. Next will come sliders, change ups, two seam fastballs, four seam fastballs, off speed pitches, sinkers and all the other nonsense from Rounders ,,,,,, er, I meant Baseball

Yes Mike deserves plenty of beer! :welldone:

OK, I'll bite - maiden over? The first over of the match or one unsullied by any scoring?

Nigel²

PS I omitted all the propaganda about civilized game because obviously that moniker belongs to Rugby! ;)

Not really a saying, but a quote from a commentary I think by Brian Johnson who was innocently reading from the score card , The bowler being named Holding, & the batsman whom he had bowled being named Willey.

I think that is the latter, not looked it up to see its history, its just a thing one knows if one is English or even British!
