Two nations I think he said, Scotland at that time was still part of the UK, so the general consensus is the USA I believe. If Nicola gets here way then it might easily be Ecosse!

Again, your knowledge astounds me, Joe! :-O
I had to look up that stuff about the unicorn and Ecosse. As for Alba.....I didn't even find it; perhaps my search engine needs a new air filter?
Why they would choose a non-existent animal as a National Symbol puzzles me; but then, Wales and Poland don't do a bad job in that department.
Maybe because he's a REAL Scot, he was thinking of the ancient species that was crossed with Meercats, and probably looked different.
The Scots also spell Meercat cross with only one "e" but I guess they're allowed to in their own country.
They even put up unicorns, gargoyles and other sculptures on top of telegraph poles and call them mercat crosses, so they must have done a lot of breeding.
Maybe they did a lot of trade with Africa back then, finished up with a surfeit of meercats, and tried to make something that could survive the colder weather?
I hear that they also experimented with mondegreens, but that's another story.
I could talk about this all day, but I know that you have a job to go to.
Cheers, Mike.

umm. IT'S 0120 hours here mate ... HELLO!
.. I'm in bed :S

btw
Keith's post prompted my search of Ecosse (French for land of Scots) I am familiar of the word Ecosse , which is to say , I've seen the word looking up my great great grand dad.

Alba is Gaelic for Scotland..

that's it

it used to be the Unicorn only but .. I think it was,.. Edward l, thought a Lion was needed to make the coat of arms look more scary .. :dunno:

I also know a thing or two about Aston Martin .. no really,.. ask DB.. :) :worried: 8)

Dave....I don't want to get him started on that just yet, we haven't finished completely hijacking this thread yet!
Promise- next set of screen shots that you post, I'll ask Joe about Aston Martins.

Joe, apparently the change was at this point:
Coat of arms of James VI from 1603 as King of Great Britain, France and Ireland.
The above caption is between the 2Unicorns and the Unicorn-Lion version. You did quite well, and maybe you are right and the internet is wrong?

Your image excludes the motto:
NEMO.ME.IMPUNE.ACESSIT
Which I have seen on more ornate renditions.
Roughly translated, I think it explains why the little lion sitting gingerly on top of the uppermost crown is very red. :$
"Up here, I thought I'd be unpunished, but look where my @@se sat"

All this talk of Heraldry reminded me of a cartoon strip where there was a complaint about the delay in delivering the knight's new shield.
The heraldic artist answered with: "Do you know how hard it is to get a chicken and a weasel to pose together?"
Cheers, Mike.

You're correct . I misread an article about Robert I the Bruce "Lion of Scotland" during Edward 1 reign

Yes, Nemo me impune Lacessit is: No one injures me with Impunity.
In Defens, short for: In my defens God me defend.

In any event.
I hope Brian got his answer
:hide:
:wasntme:

PS
I can't recall DB ever posting Aston Martin photos ...can't image him starting now. :shhh:
