Also, the anniversary of the start of the Second World War in 1939. By co-incidence, that also ties in with the second birthday of my late beloved Father.

Not an easy day for me.

This was taken some time afterwards....

EDIT2:
But I THINK this might be the real deal (see below)
Image

Name CHIVERSTONE
Type Cargo steamship
Yard Number 489
Launched 27/07/1897
Completed 08/1897
Off. Number 105190
Engine builder Blair & Co., Stockton-on-Tees
Engine type T 3 cyl.
GRT 2946
Length (feet) 330
Beam (feet) 43.1
First owner Anning Bros., Cardiff.

History 1914 Chiverstone S.S. Co. Ltd. (Anning Bros.), Cardiff
1916 Amaral, Sutherland & Co. Ltd., Cardiff
1918 Guéret's Anglo-Brazilian Coaling Co. Ltd., Cardiff
1919 The Times Shipping Co. L:td., Cardiff
1920 renamed MICHAELSTON
1924 FERNGARTH, Henry Clapham & Co. Ltd. (L. Macarthy), Newcastle
1928 Garthh Shipping Co. Ltd. (same manager)

Fate 16/10/1929 Damaged when rammed by Norwegian HEDRUN while at anchor in Havre Roads, on passage Casablanca for Rouen with phosphate, broken up in France during 03/1930.
Sounds like he was on another ship when he was sunk. Makes sense, as he's in uniform, while the Chiverstone was a freighter.
Jaunty angle on your ancestor's cap, Joe.
If I'd worn my school cap like that, I' would have got detention. :(

Have searched lists of ships sunk in WWI, but could not find Chiverston or Chiverston Cardiff.
Tried searching for any ship called Chiverston, but Google found Chiverton by the truckload.
I tried, Joe ;)

EDIT: Could the name be Chiverstone? see this from the National Archives; any familiar names here?
