"You've seen images from the Apollo missions before, but you've never seen anything like this. More than 8,400 images from NASA's Moon missions have been uploaded to Flickr at a resolution of 1800 dpi.

NASA didn't just send astronauts to the Moon to do scientific exploration, it also sent them equipped with a handful of Hasselblad cameras. The images from these cameras were preserved, and many were digitized. But in recent years the screens we use — the ones in our living rooms, on our desks, and even the ones in our pockets — have seen a drastic increase in quality, leaving these photos looking pixelated and fuzzy. Thanks to some tiresome work from a few enthusiasts, every photo taken on the Moon (and many of the ones taken on the way there and back) has been uploaded in high resolution to one massive Flickr gallery."

What a great find. I've just started looking at the albums, and they really are fascinating. There are so many photographs that we haven't seen before, and it's easy to dismiss some of them as unremarkable, until you remember they were taken by human beings walking around on the moon 40-odd years ago.

From what I've always heard the stars don't appear in the moon images because the cameras were set to take pictures in bright lighting. The stars just weren't bright enough to overcome the camera settings.

I can't remember who posted an article about AL Worden's experience in the Apollo command module when he was furthest from earth, round the backside of the moon.
He said the numbers of stars are just so immense he wasn't able to distinguish a single star. they all -were as a sheet of light.
the photos of the moon from Apollo 15 were taken by him, he mapped about 25 % of the moon.....

... I met one of the astronauts who walked on the moon at KLNA , Lantana airport , didn't even know who he was at first,, sometime I should write about it, Hardly BBC news worthy though...
The best part, I guess, was the way I found out what he'd done without him actually telling me...
