Hmmmm, it looks as if the LAA will be looking even harder at old engines and their susceptibility to cracks in crankshafts.

This was a rather common problem some years ago with the Continental O240 fitted to Reims Cessna Aerobats, and gave rise to a hilarious incident where a student came in and reported to an instructor that the engine was running roughly. Out came the instructor, and instructor and student did a couple of circuits without incident and taxied in . There you are, said the instructor " all in your imagination ", and pulled the mixture control. As the engine turned through the last couple of compressions, the prop and the nose of the crankshaft fell off !
