I'm not doubting you at all, but where did you learn that?
an excuse for not gardening in the winter?
For the news article version from the BBC: http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-30119410
There are quite a few articles in medical literature these are the first two I found.
Full article but with a very small group studied: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2958046/
The abstract of a larger group "Sudden cardiac death after manual or automated snow removal" http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14516887
This might be more relevant for you as it's about the increased risk of myocardial infarct and sudden cardiac death during the winter: Seasonality and Daily Weather Conditions in Relation to Myocardial Infarction and Sudden Cardiac Death in Olmsted County, Minnesota, 1979 to 2002

Happy reading.
Hi Joe,
That's a very generous offer and I would ask you to send it, but the couriers round here seem to be incapable of finding my house. But that's a rant for another day.

Re: Snowmegedon II
Yes, I am well aware of the cardiac risks, especially since I had heart failure a few years ago. I take it in small steps about 20 minutes at a time and stop before that if I get tired. I do exercise regularly so I am not a complete couch potato.. The news coverage has repeated the warning several times and one guy in nearby Maryland died while shoveling snow and I am sure there have been more on the East Coast... As far as paying some young entrepreneur, I have a feeling I would have to pay a lot more than $20 for this lot. Maybe I could get another mortgage on my house! $20 is what they want when we get 2 inches of snow, imagine what 30 inches would cost.

Well let's see, 2 goes into 30 - 15 times ..nigelb wrote: $20 is what they want when we get 2 inches of snow, imagine what 30 inches would cost.

1 , 2 cost 20 dollars .. So 15 - 20's is 300.00
Well heck, you could buy a snow blower for that!
But then you could rent it out to a younger entrepreneur. (You now, being the older entrepreneur) and it would pay for itself..
Plus.. No heart attack - no funeral..
Oh ..there is the matter of a small consultant fee for me... That, ... you might have to take a mortgage out on.
Re: Snowmegedon II
Just take it slowly Nigel, I managed this mess last year and I've had 2 heart attacks!!

Took 1 hour to dig a path up to the road so my dog could have his morning pee!! lol

Sorry, no consulting fee because I already have a small snow blower and besides, I am a cheap b*st*rd. It is a bit overwhelmed by the amount we got but it works once i shovel off a foot or so. I am finished except for moving the mountain of snow left by the snow plows at the end of my driveway. At least the temp was above freezing today so mother nature helped with the melt..
Robbie - That is an impressive amount of snow there! How much did you get?

Re: Snowmegedon II
Cold air causes blood vessels to conract and breathing cold air into the lungs causes problems especially if you have an underlying or undetected heart problem

Hi Nigel,
Last year was pretty bad we had a total of around 8 feet, this year is totally the opposite, not had more than 6 inches.....yet!!!
Joe,
My puppy is not an ox..he's only 154 lbs..it was pretty funny that morning though, I opened the door to let him out for his morning constitutional but the snow was 4 feet up the door, it left the imprint of the door in the snow and he just couldn't make sense of that lol,
