Is there another way of installing VFR Scenery?

Post by 233SQN »

Hi all

I’ve just bought a new PC and trying to reinstall all my old software, but I’m struggling with the Playsims VFR Gen X version 3 Vol’s 1 and 3. Before i give up totally I'm trying again to install them, and have just bought a brand new boxed Vol 1 just in case the disks were knackered but its no different.

My set up is FSX Steam running Windows 10. My Horizon Vol3 and Treescape installed perfectly (all from CD) but the Playsim verions (also boxed) just hang up on the installers at various stages, but always after a disk swap… the drive just chatters and there’s no further progress.

Can anyone offer any solutions?....is there an alternative way of installing them instead of just following the installers?

I have tried the Playsims support forum bit it's closed to new users!
Thanks

Hi Colin :hello:

I dunno if this would help but do you have enough space to pull the content of the dvd's to a folder/s on your HD then try running from there? Odd that they're all failing on cd change *-)

Not that it helps you much but I keep my VFR scenery on another drive with a backup of my scenery.cfg so in the unhappy event I'd need to reinstall.. I'd only have to reinstall FSX then add the backup scenery.cfg containing the VFR entries. Something to note for future use.. if you ever get that far. I'd send you my backup were it not for the fact it's for ver2 with ver3 updates. I have ver 3 'full' discs but have yet to need them.

Maybe a trawl online to see if any other users have had the same problem would help *-)

Breakthrough!

Just got all four disks installed for the south!! But got a message saying that I need to enable them manually in the scenery library, not perfect but I haven't got this far before!!
Thanks

Excellent news, Colin.
IIRC, all add on scenery has to be manually added to your library.
Glad to hear that it's working for Steam.
There was some recent chat on the subject of Scotland Vol7 I think.
One happy poster had recently reinstalled all 13 vols., but I think that was not Steam.

btw, that tip from DaveB is one that I've had to use in the past, to add Acceleration.
It was so annoying that MS software, running on a MS operating system, could be so awkward to install.

Ok... now trying to install them!!

When I navigate to the playsims folder i see folders for .6 photo, 1.2 photo etc.

I assume I layer them in the same order in in the FSX add scenery window as they sit in the playsims folders?

I also have anew folder "vectors" which doesn't seem to appear in the Horizon structure that is installed and working.... do i have to add that too?
Thanks

Colin..

Here's an extract of my scenery.cfg.. default with Vol's 1, 2, 3 and 4 installed. As previously mentioned.. this shows ver2 (for vols 1, 2 and 3) with ver3 updates. Only Vol3 has a vertex entry..

It should give you some idea of the install sequence.

Thanks Dave… I’m not entirely sure what I’m looking at though!

I have tried manually installing one area only as a trial… failed dismally!! Here’s what I did in case anyone can spot what I’m doing wring…

Went to addon scenery box, add area

Went to Playsims folder (inside are two folders “VFR Gen X” and “Volume 1”. The “Volume 1” folder just has 2.4 photo and a texture folder in it …. I think this might be something to do with Treescape?

The VFR Gen X folder has another folder inside called “Volume 1” this has:

3D landmarks
Area 1
Area 2
Area3
Docs
Links
Vectors
Uninstaller.

I drilled down into Area 1 only… inside are:

.6 photo
1.2 photo
2.4 night
2.4 photo
4.8 mesh
Vectors

So I added the above, one folder at a time. When I clicked on the first folder (.6 photo) the “directory” box filled correctly with the folder detail and the “Scenery area title” box was populated but only with “0.6 photo” no other info.

I did this for all the folders within Area 1.

All the scenery areas could be seen afterwards in the add scenery box and I reshuffled them to get the layer order correct. They all had the same short titles (ie just “0.6photo”) instead of the full title as seen in other entries

When I OK’d it all and came out of the add scenery page it tried to build a scenery file but came up with a number of dialogue boxes stating various vectors in scenery areas 148 -153 were missing. I went back in and added the vectors file from the main VFR folder as well but it made no difference.

Finally…. I set up a flight in the area abut no sign of VFR scenery!

Any thoughts??
Thanks

Yup.. I can see how this looks complicated and it is. It doesn't help that I'm showing you one thing and you're trying to install (what could be) something different.

In my install.. the first thing to be added is/was Vol1 Area1 2.4 Photo. Next.. Vol1 Area1 4.8 mesh. Next Vol1 Area1 1.2 Photo followed by Vol1 Area1 2.4 Night.
Then came Vol1 Area2 2.4 Photo, Vol1 Area2 4.8 mesh, Vol1 Area2 1.2 Photo and Vol1 Area2 2.4 Night. After this comes Vol1 Area3.. all installed in the same order. This gives Vol1 Area1 2.4 Photo the lowest priority (as it was installed first) and Vol1 Area3 2.4 Night the highest priority as it was installed last.

I then installed the Volume 1 v3 updates in the following order:
Vol1 update Southern England and South Wales - Vectors
Vol1 update Southern England and South Wales - Area1 0.6m Photo
Vol1 update Southern England and South Wales - Area2 0.6m Photo
Vol1 update Southern England and South Wales - Area3 0.6m Photo
Vol1 update Southern England and South Wales - 3D Landmarks

This would display in Add/Remove Scenery inside FSX with Vol1 Area1 2.4 Photo at the bottom of the list and Vol1 update Southern England and South Wales - 3D Landmarks sitting on top.. priority 1. Then.. the whole rigmarole again with Vol2 Area1 etc etc. You can see now why it's a good policy to keep a backup of the scenery.cfg!!

Hope this gives a better clue as to what's going wrong with your install. You can of course, change the order in Add/Remove Scenery from within FSX.

From memory, the big problem with the DVDs was that there's loads of relatively small files on them. I had two dvd drives that struggled with them, after which i used the George Davison method and just took a back up copy of the installed folders from the hard disk, so now if I need to reinstall, I just copy from the backup and add the scenery.cfg entries manually.

It’s sooo frustrating!!!!

Today, after numerous failed attempts (and buying a brand new copy of Vol 1 South…. Only £5 on Flighstore which didn’t cure it either) I finally got all 4 CDs to install without hanging up and no missing file messages.

The scenery is all there…. All 29Gb of it, I checked.

But…. I have to install it manually. The process all works ok through the addon scenery page, I can find the files, they all add ok (except the file name which defaults to a basic 0.6M Photo etc so I added a “south area 1 etc” to help identify it, however the directory path is correct and I don’t touch that. Everything looks fine in the addon scenery box, all the files are there and ticked for action

However after finishing the add process and the scenery CFG file re runs it comes up with messages stating a number (about 6) missing files (vectors and scenery areas).

When I try a flight…. No scenery, just default FSX.

Is the answer to a create a manual cfg file? (getting out of my depth now!!) The Playsims forum is also closed to new registrations…. So no help there!
Thanks
