PC Surgery...

Post by petermcleland »

I'm just going to do a bit of surgery on my PC...I have already installed Windows 10 Pro and now I'm taking out my dear old friend the GeForce 285 and replacing it with an MSI GeForce GTX 980 4G. I have already installed P3D v3.2 and it already has seen my old graphics card...What I want to know is, should I delete the old P3D.cfg file to let it make a new one for my new graphics card when I've installed it? And if so, then where do I find the P3D.cfg file?...Thanks for any replies :)

I'm probably the last person to accept advice from, Peter, but;
I think that FSX reviews and re-writes its .cfg whenever it starts. If the .cfg is deleted, FSX will create a new one next time it runs.
IF that's the case, I would think that P3D would recognise the new card, and adjust itself accordingly.

Now commencing evasive action :fly:
Cheers, Mike.

Hi Peter,
Solely out of curiosity, because I do not have or ever had P3d, I went for a hunt to find where exactly the cfg file is placed .
Well, it seams there are several cfg files.
This is from http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/thread ... 243/page-2

The .cfgs we have are listed below:

airlines.cfg
autogen.cfg
display.cfg
effects.cfg
fonts.cfg
gauges.cfg
scaleform.cfg
scenarios.cfg
scenery.cfg
shadersHLSL.cfg
simobjects.cfg
sound.cfg
suneffect.cfg
terrain.cfg
texture.cfg
weather.cfg

More specific to your query (updating hardware)
The following is in regards to 3.3... I'm aware you're working with 3.2, but perhaps if updating to 3.3 - hardware upgrades may be an issue.. There may be a hiccup with v3.2...?

Link
http://www.prepar3d.com/latest-news/

.... The Prepar3D v3.3 Client update will require you to reactivate your product, however if you have an internet connection or have not made any major hardware changes between installations this should not be an issue. For more information please view the Prepar3D v3 Download and Installation Directions.

ATB, I'm sure Dave G. Or DB, ,.. BW, KF, PK, .. Someone will have an answer.
BTW, P3D is looking very good, wish I had a PC to run it.
But then I have FSX and FLIGHT, and I don't have much time to use them.

Cheers

Joe

The p3d.cfg will be in "c:/users/yourusername/appdata/roaming/Lockheed Martin/Prepar3d v3"

You probably don't need to actually delete it, it will just add the relevant entries.
You will need to delete the shader cache though.
That's located at "c:/users/yourusername/appdata/local/Lockheed Martin/Prepar3d v3". Delete the whole "shaders" folder, nothing else.
They're hidden folders, so make sure you have hidden files showing. Alternatively, hit "win+R" and type %appadata% and Windows will open the AppData folder so you can navigate from there.
Make sure you're using the latest drivers too.
P3d will rebuild the cache when it starts, but may take a while, so don't worry too much if things look odd for a minute or two.
Hope that all makes sense!

Thanks Gents...DaveG I have copied and pasted your advice and will use it when I have my new card installed. The version of P3D that I have installed is version 3.3.3.17556 and the SimConnect is version 3.3.0.0.

One more general question is about extra monitors on my new graphics card...I see that there is only one old fashioned connector with an adaptor that I can use to connect to my main Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070 and that is how I will go initially with just one monitor...There are about three HDMI connectors on the new graphics card but HDMI did not exist when my monitors were made...My question is - Do modern flat screen monitors have an HDMI socket for input?

Hello Peter,
Generally speaking, yes new monitors have the HDMI connector , although there are thee economy priced line which have just the VGA connection. I have doubts you'll find many new monitors with the DVI connector.
Then again, high end, highly priced monitors very well may have all three.
Or maybe all five. Or six :-O
Composite, Component, S Video, VGA, DVI, HDMI.
... Of course, there are an array of video connector adapters to convert one to another.

I believe I need a refreshing refreshment after that.
... happy cutting.... Cheers

Hi Peter :hello: Most monitors now come with Displayport sockets which look similar to hdmi. Ive just ordered a Gigabyte Nvidia gtx 970 to replace an ati 6800. When I built my rig I never knew that fsx supposedly runs /looks better on nivdia. The new card has one hdmi which I will use for the main display and 3 Displayports which hopefully will connect to my old vga moitors via ebay adaptors at £3.50 a throw My aim is to run DX10 (steve's fixer) As far as I can find out this is possible using multi monitors providing they are connected to one graphics adaptor
