Alice to Darwin...

Post by petermcleland »

Here is my RTW leg 4:-

Image
A LOT of this desert to cross so...

Image
...I'll play with some...

Image
...cockpit...

Image
...views

Image
I like those patches of sunlight moving across the leather seats.

Image
Those temperature gauges are only on the co-pilot side.

Image
According to the GPS map we should be reaching the end of the desert soon!

Image
And here it is with some strange looking "outback".

Image
A bit over an hour to go...Co-pilot complaining that his arse is sore!

Image
Runway 29 would be convenient but sadly the wind is wrong for that...

Image
...and we will have to position for...

Image
...runway 11, which has not got an ILS.

Image
Here we are being vectored towards a Thunderstorm with a lot of lightning!

Image
But we have cleared it now and are being vectored for a Visual Approach to RW11

Image
Crossing the hedge and...

Image
...touching down smoothly.

Image
Tailwheel down and the flight is almost over.

Image
Parked up for...

Image
...a few days :)

Thanks for looking...They all look better if clicked to Full Size :)

Great series Peter, makes me jealous I don't have the time to do something similar.

Another brilliant show of screenshots there Peter. Asd for using R/W 11 without ILS do you use a Backcourse for your approach?

Think you should supply your co-pilot with a cushion to sit on for your next long haul flight!!

Nigel.

No I didn't use the backcourse for the approach because 1. I'm not quite sure how to use it on the C47 and 2. Control specified a Visual Approach and vectored me very nicely till I saw the lights straight ahead from some miles out and from then on I concentrated outside the window rather than inside...I still had the SHFT4 strip at the top of screen and that has a speed readout. BTW Ernie calls out "Speed Low" if it gets down to 80 and "Speed Ninety" if it gets to 90...He is very helpful in that respect. I like to use the Default out of "front window" view, with no zoom, for actually landing.

Dave it's bad enough with just Ernie and Jane...I keep thinking of them as real people on board!...I got rid of all the PAX but Ernie still asks me to open a window in turbulence "Cause a Passenger is being sick"...I now open his window!!

Thanks for the reply regarding backcourse Peter,
I got rid of all the PAX but Ernie still asks me to open a window in turbulence "Cause a Passenger is being sick"...I now open his window!!
Going to have to start flying again with the full crew, keep forgetting that they are there, must be my age! :worried:

Well Ernie is pretty useful as he calls the items on the checklist and waits till you have done the item before calling the next...Sometimes you need to tell him to repeat or even "skip to next Item"...I prefer to take off with the tailwheel unlocked because I don't have rudder pedals and have "Auto Rudder" selected in the settings, so if you do the same you might need to unlock it again after he locks it...He also sometimes sets the cowl flaps as they are over on his side but don't expect it as he doesn't always do it. However, he will warn if an engine is getting hot. Ernie gets bored on long flights and tends to sing a bit! You may find the crew presence a bit aggravating but you can always switch off their voices...But don't bank on that working.

I really love this aeroplane and recon it is the best I have ever had in any flight sim :agree:

BTW I have not changed any "Turbulence" settings and I won't because I find it is very realistically simulated.

Jane sometimes murmurs the odd thing in your ear!!

Peter, this surprised me when you said this as I figured you are probably the most experienced real world pilot who regularly visits this site and least likely to turn off any realism settings. I use one of those twist joy sticks to control the rudder but as I think about it there probably are no real world aircraft that use that sort of control.

BTW, what's your next destination?

Joe, my next port of call is Bali...But I won't be doing it till about three weeks from now. I suppose as I really like flying prop driven aircraft I should really get a set of pedals but I've managed for so many years without them...I will get some when I've got some spare cash to use. I wonder what the experts consider to be the best make of pedals?
